Yandong town is located in Liping County, Guizhou Province, 28 kilometers away from the county seat. In 1982, Yandong district was set up. In 1992, Yandong district was withdrawn and merged into Yandong township. In December 1999, Yandong township was withdrawn and changed into a town. It has jurisdiction over 10 administrative villages and one neighborhood committee, with a total population of 14600. The Dong population accounts for more than 95% of the total population. It is a minority town with Dong as the main ethnic group and Han and Miao as well. The total area of the town is 146 square kilometers, the altitude is between 340-800 meters, the total area of cultivated land is 10058 mu, the per capita cultivated land is 0.72 mu, the average annual temperature is 16 ℃, the annual rainfall is 1000-1300mm, and the frost free period is 260-280 days.

The town is rich in resources and needs to be developed. The town is agriculture oriented, and also engaged in forestry and other animal husbandry and sideline production. It mainly produces grain crops such as rice and potato, and economic crops such as rape, beans and cotton, with a forest coverage rate of 50%. In order to protect and develop Dong folk songs, the most distinctive Chinese folk music art, Mr. Yang duogui and Deng minwen from the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of social sciences have applied for the project of rescue, protection, inheritance and development of Dong folk songs, which has been funded by the international Ford Foundation. In October 2002, with the support of the international Fuquan foundation and Mr. Deng minwen, a talent training base for Dong folk songs was officially established in Yandong middle school. Each year, 30 to 50 outstanding students are selected to form a Dong folk song training class; a centralized training class is conducted for the county's Dong folk song teachers; the inheritors of Dong culture are trained; at the same time, bilingual teaching of "Chinese and Dong" is carried out in Yandong primary school, and the pilot teaching of "Chinese, Dong and English" is carried out in Zhuping primary school.
