In 1941, Dafang County was under the jurisdiction of Nayong.
In 1953, half village of Dongkou Township and Niuchang village of Yonghe Township were merged into Xinfang township.
In 1958, it was merged into Xinfang commune.
In July 1984, it was changed to Xinfang Miao Yi Township in Yangchang district.
In November 1991, Xinfang Miao Yi Township, huangjiatun Yi Miao Township, Yijiao Miao Yi Township and Yingpan Township in Yangchang district were merged into Xinfang Yi Miao township.
