Wayan township is located in the northwest of Yuexi County, about 10 kilometers away from the county. It borders Xinmin Town in the East, Xishan Township in the south, Mianning County in the West and Banqiao Township in the north. With an average altitude of 1320 meters, the township covers an area of 108.2 square kilometers, with a three-dimensional distribution from 1620 meters to 3886 meters above sea level. Farmers generally live below 2500 meters. The annual average temperature is 13.2 ℃, and the frost free period is 245 days. The annual rainfall is 1100 mm. The land is fertile and productive. There are 6 257 people in 24 groups of 9 villages. Currently, there are more than 5700 mu of farmland. It is a mixed town of Yi and Han people, mainly in planting and breeding.

Wayan township has unique advantages in natural environment, with good temperature, light and water resources. The main food crops are corn, potato, buckwheat and oats. The main cash crops are: tobacco, marigold. Among them, flue-cured tobacco is the main pillar industry, and its area ranks the third in the county. Chinese herbal medicine mainly cultivated rhubarb, white bupleurum, Codonopsis, angelica and other precious medicinal materials, is our county's medicine base. The forest and fruit industry mainly produces walnut and pear. The annual output of walnut and pear reached 50000 Jin and 300000 Jin respectively. Breeding industry has a vast grassland, which provides favorable conditions for raising pigs and yellow sheep. There are abundant mineral resources (coal, iron ore, pyrite), especially silicon ore with 99.4% content and pyrite with 42% content. Wayan township has 10800 mu of barren hills, barren slopes and grassland, which can be developed and cultivated for 9000 mu, with convenient transportation. There is natural pure water at the foot of yangnuo snow mountain, which can be developed into mineral water. In 2007, there were 1458 households, 6497 people, and 13570 pigs, cattle, sheep and horses. There is a central school, four point schools and one health center in the township.

On January 12, 2021, the people's Government of Sichuan Province decided to abolish wayan Township and establish Banqiao Town. The former administrative region of wayan township is the administrative region of Banqiao Town. The people's Government of Banqiao Town is located at No. 66, Baoxin Road, Banqiao Village.
