Shutan town is located in the reservoir area of Shuangtan hydropower station in the northeast of Pingchang County, Bazhong City, Sichuan Province. It is adjacent to Qiujia town in the East, Yuntai town in the south, Yuanshan town and Lingshan Town in the west, and Shuangquan Town, Tiefo town and Qubin town in Tongjiang County in the North. It is 29km away from the county, with an average altitude of 580 meters and an area of 41.89 square kilometers.

The people's Government of Sichuan Province recently issued the "reply on agreeing to adjust the administrative divisions of some towns and townships in Pingchang and Nanjiang counties", agreeing to abolish Yuanshi Township, Fenbi Township, Shutan Township and Gaofeng Township in Pingchang County, and establish Yuanshi Township, Fenbi Township, Shutan Township and Gaofeng township; abolishing gaota Township, Fengyi Township, Xingma Township and Guanmen Township in Nanjiang County, and establishing gaota Township, Fengyi Township, Xingma Township and Guanmen township Town. On May 25, 2020, the people's Government of Sichuan Province decided to abolish Shutan town.
