Jitian town is located in the east of Lianshan County, Qingyuan City, where national highway 323 and provincial highway 1960 meet. Jitian town has a total area of 173.4 square kilometers (2017) and a population of 25819 (2017). The administrative divisions of Jitian town in Lianshan county are: Jitian neighborhood committee and six management areas (village committees) including Lianhua, Gaoping, Shixi, Xintian, Shatian and Dongfeng.

During the period from Liang Dynasty in the Southern Dynasty to Tianshun Dynasty in the Ming Dynasty, it was the county government three times. Shangji township was set up in Longqing period of Ming Dynasty. It was renamed as Jitian Township in 1939. In 1961, it was changed into commune. In 1965, the county moved from Yonghe to Jitian. In 1980, it was divided into Jitian town. In 1983, it was changed into district. In 1985, it was withdrawn and merged into town.
