Datong Mountain Forest Farm

Datongshan state-owned forest farm in Shimen County of Hunan Province was founded in 1958. At that time, there were few people and small area. It was only engaged in the preparatory work of tree seedling raising and field expansion. In the winter of 1959, it was named Datong mountain farm of Shimen County. In September 1962, with the approval of the higher authorities, it was renamed as the state-owned datongshan forest farm in Shimen County, Hunan Province, with an area of only 1935 hectares. This part of collective forest was converted into state-owned forest farm at a discount by the state, and gradually developed into a state-owned forest farm of the existing scale.

Over the past 50 years since the establishment of Datong mountain forest farm, the scale of the forest farm has gradually expanded, and the total area of the whole farm has reached 2108 hectares. Under the guidance of the policy of building timber forest mainly based on pine and Chinese fir forest and actively carrying out diversified management, great achievements have been made in forestry production, with a total of 1019 hectares of afforestation, 972 hectares of forest, 23000 cubic meters of timber production, and 2.5 million yuan of capital construction and investment. The forest area is 1862.2 hectares, with 52167 cubic meters of standing trees and 91.6% of forest coverage. There are 100 employees (excluding retired employees), including 13 administrative staff and 87 employees. The forest farm has two agricultural villages, one forest protection team and one state-owned orange garden. The total population was 1311 (2010). There are more than 20 species of rare wild animals, such as civet, muntjac, wild boar, hedgehog and five step snake. The vegetation is rich, mainly pine, fir and other timber forests. The forest farm has invested 150000 yuan to build a 30 mu landscaping nursery stock base, which is rich in greening nursery stock resources. There are 378 woody plants, belonging to 80 families and 182 genera, including 183 species of trees, 142 species of shrubs, 51 species of woody vines and 2 species of bamboo.
