In 1945, it belonged to poli District of zangma county. In 1947, poli district was set up as southern Tibet District. In 1956, zangma county was merged into poli District of Jiaonan county. In 1958, it belonged to poli commune. In 1961, it was set up as southern Tibet commune. In 1984, it was changed to Henghe township. In 1987, it was renamed as southern Tibet township. In 1993, it was established as a town. geographical environment
