Gangcheng District, located in the hinterland of central Shandong Province, is under the jurisdiction of Jinan City, Shandong Province. It is adjacent to Laiwu District in the north and West, Xintai City in the South and Yiyuan County in Zibo City in the East. From south to north, the geomorphic units are denuded residual hills and alluvial plains. The climate is warm temperate continental monsoon climate with four distinct seasons. It has jurisdiction over 5 streets and 3 functional areas including Gangcheng Economic Development Zone, Gangcheng high tech Zone and Qishan National Forest Park, with a total of 230 administrative villages, covering an area of 507 square kilometers and a population of 330000. Gangcheng district is located in the center of Shandong Province, with Beijing Shanghai, Qinglan, Tailai, Bolai expressways, cilai railway, central and southern Shanxi railway and other railway hubs. In the Shang Dynasty, the northern part of the territory belonged to mu.

In the Zhou Dynasty, the northern part of the territory belonged to Muzi.

In the Western Han Dynasty, the northern part of the territory belonged to Mu County, and the southern part (Huangzhuang, Zhaizi area) belonged to Junyi county.

In the Sui Dynasty, Ying county was in the north and Xintai County in the south.

In Tang Dynasty, Laiwu county was in the north and Xintai County in the south.

In the early Song Dynasty, the southern part of the territory belonged to Xintai County, and later to Mengyin County.

From Ming Dynasty to Qing Dynasty, the northern part of the territory belonged to Dongxiang of Laiwu County, and the southern part belonged to Beiyi District of Mengyin County.

In August 1990, five townships including Yanzhuang Town, chengzipo Town, Lixin Town, Zhaizi town of Xintai City and Huangzhuang town of Yiyuan County were put under the jurisdiction of Gangcheng Office of Laiwu City. Gangcheng office is the agency of Laiwu municipal government (deputy county level).

In November 1992, Laiwu City was upgraded from a county-level city to a prefecture level city. At the same time, Gangcheng district was established, which was the beginning of the administrative construction of Gangcheng district.

In September 1995, chengzipo town was renamed chengzipo street, and Lixin township was renamed Lixin town.

In December 2000, chengzipo street was merged with Zhaizi township to establish Aishan street. The government is located in beichengzipo and has jurisdiction over 36 administrative villages (communities).

In May 2001, Gangcheng District of Laiwu economic development zone was established.

In May 2003, four villages of Songjiazhuang, gaojiazhuang, bianjiaquan and fujiaqiao under the jurisdiction of Aishan street and xiaoshangyu village under the jurisdiction of Huangzhuang town were put under the management of Gangcheng District of Laiwu economic development zone.

In June 2006, Xinzhuang Town was transferred from Laicheng district to Gangcheng district. So far, the district has jurisdiction over Aishan street and Yanzhuang Town, Huangzhuang Town, Lixin Town, Xinzhuang Town, a total of 232 administrative villages (communities), with a total area of 512.34 square kilometers.

In January 2019, the State Council approved Shandong Province to adjust the administrative division of Laiwu City, cancel Laiwu City, and put its jurisdiction under the jurisdiction of Jinan City; establish Jinan Gangcheng District, and take the former administrative region of Laiwu Gangcheng district as the administrative region of Gangcheng district. The exposed strata in Gangcheng district are Cambrian, Ordovician, Carboniferous, Permian, Cretaceous and Quaternary. Mouwen River and its tributaries flow mainly from southeast to northwest, and the geomorphic units from south to north are residual hills and alluvial plains formed by denudation. The main rivers in Gangcheng district are Muwen River and its tributaries Xinzhuang River, Panlong River, Yanzhuang River, yanwang River and Lantou river. Muwen river is 27 km long, Xinzhuang river is 29.3 km long, Panlong River is 23 km long, Yanzhuang river is 17 km long, yanwang river is 10.24 km long, and Lantou river is 10.5 km long.
