Historical evolution

Nanyang town was generally known as Yuxi in ancient times. Later, it was named Nanyang after the peak in the north, Nanshan peak, and the open Yuxi basin in the south. There are many villages in the basin, which was called "Yuxi 36 villages" in ancient times. Due to the relatively flat terrain, moderate water and heat, suitable for forestry and agriculture, developed education, prosperous humanities and active commodity economy since ancient times, Shouning is known as the land of fish and rice and the reputation of "Shouning is better than Nanyang".

Before Shouning County was built, Nanyang town was under the jurisdiction of thirteen capitals of Xixiang, Changxi County, which was called xiaoyuxi. In 1455, Shouning County was established and Nanyang town was subordinate to Shouning. Before the Republic of China, the capital, Tu and Jia were established. After the founding of the people's Republic of China, the county was divided into five districts at the beginning, Nanyang was divided into the Fifth District.
