Time: 2022-01-29 14:25:48 Author: ChinaWiki.net

Stone Fort Park is a memorial park built with Qilu Fort as the main scenic spot. Qilu fort was built in the 13th year of Tongzhi in the Qing Dynasty and completed in the 5th year of Guangxu (1874-1879). It took five years and cost 80000 silver yuan. It has a history of more than 100 years. It is located in the southeast corner of old Shantou. It is a circular castle building, which echoes with the fort on su'an mountain across the bank. It holds the entrance and exit of Shantou Bay. Its geographical location is very dangerous. It is the main coastal defense building in eastern Guangdong in the Qing Dynasty. In the middle of the 19th century, the first and second Opium Wars broke out one after another. The corrupt and incompetent Qing government signed the Treaty of Nanjing and the Treaty of Tianjin with the United States, Britain, France and other powers. Shantou was one of the ten trading ports at that time. Due to the influx of foreign merchant ships and the loose defense in Shanghai, Fang Yaoshun, then commander-in-chief of Chaozhou, asked the Qing government to build Qilu fort in response to the public opinion. Qilu fort is mainly made of shellfish ash sand, boiled glutinous rice and brown sugar paste. The gate and gun lane are built with standard granite blocks, so they are commonly known as "stone fort". The total area of the fort is 19607 square meters, of which the castle area is 10568 square meters. There is a moat 23 meters wide and 3 meters deep around the fort. The diameter of the square inside the fort is 85 meters, the diameter of the whole fort is 116 meters, the height of the outer wall is 6 meters, and the height of the inner wall is 5.15 meters. The fort is divided into two layers, each with 18 gun positions and a number of gun holes. The gun lane at the bottom is 4.1 meters long, about 300 meters long, deep and circuitous. There is a 27 pole corrugated stone step in the fort, which is ingenious and practical in design, and is convenient for the gun to be pushed onto the platform. There are 72 ventilation flower towers on the table, each of which is a group of three. It is used to convey information from the top to the bottom of the turret and provide ventilation and lighting at the bottom. In the northeast of the fort, there is a crescent shaped platform for commanding and watching soldiers' drill. In the northwest corner of the platform, there is a spiral stone terrace leading to the gun lane. The steps are relatively hidden, which is convenient for evacuation and ammunition transportation to the platform during combat. The stone fort is solid and tight. The largest gun in the fort is a 5000 bore foreign gun with a range of 15-60 Li, which has a certain deterrent effect on the invaders. There was a fresh water well in the northeast corner of the fort square, which was the drinking water of the Qing soldiers at that time. Although the well is only tens of meters away from the sea, the water is sweet and pure. In 1983, it was included in the overall construction plan of Shantou City and decided to expand 58 mu of land around the stone fort to build a stone Fort Park in Shantou City. In 1988, the stone Fort Park monument was designated as a provincial key cultural relics protection unit by Shantou Municipal People's government; in 1989, it was designated as a provincial key cultural relics protection unit by Guangdong Provincial People's government; in January 1995, it was designated as a patriotic education base by Shantou Municipal Party committee and municipal government.
