Shen Zengzhi's former residence is No.1 yaojiadai in Jiaxing City. Facing south from north, it is a quadrangle two-story house with brick and wood structure built in late Qing Dynasty. Inside is zoumatang building, with hall, garden, etc.

Overview of former residence

There are five rooms in the first entrance, the hall in the middle, and the two sides are connected by Xiang Lou, which forms zoumatang Lou with the second entrance. The second is the fifth Bay, with a hall in the middle and two rooms on each side. The third entrance is a three Bay building with a well in the East. There are five bungalows behind the building. The gate faces south and has a hall. To the east of the gate are five bungalows and a side gate. Shen Zengzhi's former residence is complete in appearance, and basically keeps its original appearance except for the built houses in the garden site

Profile

Shen Zengzhi (1850-1922) was named zipei, Yian and meisuo. He is from Jiaxing, Zhejiang Province. His grandfather, Shen Weizhen, was a Jinshi. He was an official of the Ministry of industry and was called "Mr. Xiaohu". Zeng Guofan is one of his students, who wrote ten volumes of the manuscript of Bu Shu Zhai. He was once a scholar for five years, and was still a useful scholar. In his whole life, he published a lot of books. Unfortunately, when Shen Zengzhi was eight years old, Shen Zonghan died and his family declined. He read Tang poetry from childhood with his mother and learned about phonology. Although the family is poor, but the ambition of reading, never a day waste. Under the guidance of sun chunzhou, Zhou Kesheng, Wang Chuxiang, Yu Youshan, Gao Yusheng, Qin Wanqing, Ruan Jisheng, Zhu houchuan, Yong Jihou, Wang Xinzhe, Luo Jisun and his elder brother Shen zengzhen, he "made the best of the theories of the early Tongguo period and the Qianjia period" (see Wang Guowei's preface to Mr. Shen Yijin's 70th birthday), and set up the ambition of "self-cultivation, governing the country, and stabilizing personal property". He is well-known both at home and abroad for his erudition and mastery of Chinese and Western learning, and is known as "Chinese great Confucian". Guangxu six years (1880) Jinshi, Li official Prime Minister yamen Zhang Jing and other posts. In 1901, he served as the supervisor (president) of Shanghai Nanyang public school (the predecessor of Shanghai Jiaotong University). He is also a master of calligraphy. In his prime, he was fond of Zhang Yuli. Later, he went from calligraphy to stele, melting the northern and southern books into one pot. Writing emphasizes change, expresses the strangeness in the heart, forgets the paper and pen, and does nothing more. It was highly praised by the calligraphy circles at that time, and many people at home and abroad sought its calligraphy.
