Qingming Bridge

Qingming bridge, formerly known as Qingning bridge, is located at the intersection of the ancient canal and bodu port outside nanmenwai, Wuxi City, Jiangsu Province. On the south side of Qingming bridge is bodu River, which flows through Meicun to Changshu. The shape of the whole bridge is symmetrical, stable and majestic. It is the most famous scenic spot on the Wuxi ancient canal and the most attractive place for Chinese and foreign tourists.

Qingmingqiao is an ancient bridge with a long history. It was built in Wanli period of Ming Dynasty in the late 16th century. It was built by two sons of Qin Xun, the owner of Jichang Garden in Wuxi. Because the two brothers' names are Taiqing and Taining, they are called Qingning bridge. The stone bridge was rebuilt by Wu xingzuo, magistrate of Wuxi County in 1666. In the reign of Daoguang, minning changed his name to qingmingqiao because of the taboo of Emperor Daoguang. Some people also called it "qingmingqiao".

Qingming bridge is a single span stone arch bridge, 43.2 meters long, 5.5 meters wide, 8.5 meters high, with a span of 13.1 meters. Due to the high and low terrain on both sides of the Strait, the East and West Stone grades are different, with 46 in the East and 43 in the West. The arch ring is a common section parallel arrangement in the south of the Yangtze River, with 11 sections in total. There are inscriptions on the ring stones on both sides of the ring hole. One was established in Xianfeng Period of Qing Dynasty to introduce the bridge and change its name; the other was established in Tongzhi period to introduce the whole process of reconstruction of Qingming bridge. There are no carvings on the bridge railing. There are two watchposts on each side, which is very simple. In 1983, on the East and west side of the bridge, two Qing Dynasty stone tablets were found. One was written by Zou Yigui and established in the 31st year of Qianlong reign; the other was established in September of the 9th year of Tongzhi reign.

In March 1986, the famous Japanese composer takazaburo Nakayama visited the Qingming bridge in Wuxi. After returning home, he wrote the songs "Qingming bridge" and "Wuxi Travel", which expanded the influence of Wuxi and Wuxi Qingming bridge in Japan and even in the world. Love of the ancient canal, also known as the ancient canal current, is one of Shanqi series songs impression of Jiangnan.

It describes a touching love story that took place on the Bank of the ancient Yunhe River in Wuxi.

Main attractions

The former residence of Zhu Dachun, which was built in the late Qing Dynasty, is located in bodu harbor on the east side of Qingming bridge. Zhu Dachun (1856-1926), a native of Wuxi, is a well-known national industrialist. In 1904, Yuanchang machine reeling factory was founded, and Shanghai Business Association and Wuxi and Jingui business branches were founded. At the end of the Qing Dynasty and the beginning of the Republic of China, he founded Shanghai Yuanchang ginning factory, Wuxi Yuankang silk factory, Suzhou Zhenxing electric lamp factory, Yangzhou Zhenming electric company, Changzhou Zhensheng electric company, Liyang Zhenheng electric company, Nantong Zhentong electric company, etc., known as China's "electrical king". He was awarded the title of "second grade" by the Qing government and was employed as a consultant of the Ministry of agriculture, industry and commerce.

On the south side of Qingming bridge is bodu River, which flows through Meicun to Changshu. On the right side of bodu river is Dayao Road, which is the site of Wuxi's ancient kiln and brick firing. Now the kiln remains. Today, Wuxi Qunyao site museum is built.

On the west side of Qingming bridge, there is Nanchang Street (Shangtang in the old time, nanshangtang street only refers to the section of road from Jiejing qiaonong to nanshauixianmiao), square and Canal Museum under construction, and the street on the left side is called Xiatang. In the old days, there were rice markets, kilns, silk factories, docks, cinemas, restaurants and so on in Xiatang. There was a saying that "ten li in Shangtang can prosper the city and ten li in Xiatang can burn kilns".

On the north side of Qingming bridge is Dagong bridge, which was built in 1929. On the west side of Dagong bridge is the former site of Yongtai silk factory.

On January 1, 2009, the ancient canal "upstream of water" was officially opened.
