Xi'an People's Theatre

Xi'an People's theater is the fifth batch of provincial cultural relics protection units in Shaanxi Province, and is China's 20th century architectural heritage. It was built in 1954. It is located in the North Street near the bell tower in Xi'an City, with superior geographical location and convenient transportation. It is a perfect example of integrating Chinese traditional architectural art and Western elegant architectural style. It is also a landmark of Xi'an city and an important cultural symbol and brand of the city.

Architectural history

The Northwest Literature and Art Troupe (now Shaanxi song and dance troupe), which moved from Yan'an to Xi'an in 1952, has no special performance theater. With the support of the Culture Committee of the northwest military and political Commission at that time, it applied for a financial allocation of more than 1 million yuan, and decided to rebuild a theater representing the characteristics of new Chinese culture on the former site of Chang'an Grand Theater in Beidajie.

May 1954, people's Theatre

Duan Shaojia inscribed the name of the theater, which was officially completed as the theater of the northwest arts and crafts troupe. Northwest Architectural Design Company (now China Northwest Architectural Design Institute) is responsible for the design, and the third construction company of Shaanxi Province is responsible for the construction of people's theater project.

In 2003, the development and Reform Commission of Shaanxi Province invested 36 million yuan in the renovation project. The third construction company of Shaanxi Province, which initially built the people's theater, once again undertook the task of rectification and repair for two years and completed it on schedule.

Since the completion of the Xi'an People's Theatre, it has not only undertaken the important large-scale meetings of the provincial and municipal Party and government over the years, but also made important and special contributions to timely publicizing the party's line, principles and policies in various periods. Zhou Enlai, Liu Shaoqi, Chen Yi, Hu Yaobang and other major leaders of the party and the state have visited and watched performances here. He has also received performances from hundreds of famous art groups on five continents and almost all the important art groups in China. He has built a bridge of communication and friendship for Chinese and foreign artists. At the same time, he has played an important role in popularizing all kinds of art varieties and cultural styles, enriching the masses' spare time cultural life, and improving the masses' artistic taste and appreciation ability. He has become a famous artist in Northwest China To the most influential cultural performance places in the country.

Architectural honor

There are 37 buildings in China, including Beijing National Culture Palace and Beijing Great Hall of the people. Because of their special style and influence, they are listed in the history of World Architecture published by Britain. Among them, Xi'an People's theater (courtyard), Beijing Workers' Stadium and Beijing Capital Theater are listed as "one of the three" of 37 famous buildings.

In 2007, Xi'an People's theater was listed in the third batch of municipal cultural relics protection units in Xi'an.

In 2008, Xi'an People's theater was listed in the fifth batch of provincial cultural relics protection units in Shaanxi Province.

In 2016, Xi'an People's theatre was selected as "China's 20th century architectural heritage" by China cultural relics society and China Architectural Society.
