Located on Wenqi mountain, 2.5km southwest of Gangu County, Tianshui City, Gansu Province, Gangu big elephant mountain is one of the important cultural relics integrating grottoes and ancient buildings in the southeast of Gansu Province along the ancient Silk Road.
Among the cliffs in the mountain, there is a big cave on the cliff, in which there is a big Buddha made of stone and clay. Its shape is tall and majestic, which is admirable. Its cultural characteristics can be regarded as a perfect combination of Western decorative sculpture and Chinese freehand sculpture.
On both sides of the cave, there are long corridors, like a belt. The grottoes and niches on the corridor are connected, majestic and spectacular. There are 22 grottoes and niches, most of which are nearly square in plane. There are large arched niches and high altar foundations on the wall, and there are Buddhist caves for monks to practice. This is the special feature of xiangxiangshan grottoes, which is also very rare in the whole country.
