Haergai town is located in the south of Gangcha County, Qinghai Province, 27 kilometers away from the county seat. The population is 10724 (2017), mainly Tibetan. It covers an area of 1729.01 square kilometers. It has jurisdiction over eight village (animal husbandry) committees, namely gonggongma, yaxiuma, huancangxiuma, Guoluo, zangxiuma, qiecha, Chala and Tangqu.

In 1958, khargai district was established, which was changed into khargai commune in the same year, khargai Township in 1962, khargai commune in 1969, and khargai commune in 1984
