Prajna temple in Shenyang

Prajna temple was built by a monk during the reign of Emperor Kangxi of the Qing Dynasty (1684). It was rebuilt during the reign of Xuantong and the Republic of China. The temple is divided into Tianwang hall, Daxiong hall, zushitang, and Sutra collection building, etc., with complete and magnificent buildings. Prajna temple is full of incense. From the 28th of December to the 10th of the first month of the new year, 12 days of Dharma meetings are held in succession, which are propitious to prolong life, eliminate disasters and pray for blessings. At that time, many pilgrims will go to burn incense and worship Buddha.

Prajna temple is located at No. 8, ruosi lane, Danan street, Shenhe District, Shenyang City, Liaoning Province. It was built by the eminent monk gurin in 1684, and rebuilt twice in 1909 and 1924. It was damaged in the mid-1960s, and repaired and rebuilt after 1979. In October 1984, in order to commemorate the 300 years of the temple's construction, the temple was repaired and the Buddha statue was opened.

Prajna temple was announced as a municipal cultural relic protection unit in 1985. In 2015, Liaoning Provincial People's government announced it as the ninth batch of provincial cultural relics protection units in Liaoning Province.

Brief introduction to temples

Prajna temple is located in the north facing south with two courtyards, covering an area of more than 3600 square meters and a construction area of more than 1000 square meters. In front of the three heavenly kings hall, there are four statues of heavenly kings, Maitreya Buddha and Wei Tuo. There is a corner gate on both sides of the Tianwang hall. The entrance gate is the first entrance to the courtyard. On both sides is the East-West hall. Due to the north is the main hall. Inside the hall is the third Buddha. On both sides are the eighteen Arhats (rubbings). Later are the portraits of three Bodhisattvas, Guanyin, Manjusri and Puxian. In the second courtyard, there are East and West rooms. Due north is the Sutra library. The temple hall is hard mountain style, green brick gray tile, red ground battle, purlin Fang color painting, appears to be simple, elegant.

Maintenance period

Since 1981, the government has allocated funds for large-scale maintenance of the Prajna temple, which has been basically completed in three years. The temple and Buddha statue were renovated.

architectural style

On both sides of the temple are the mountain gates. On the front door is a plaque with three gold characters of "Prajna Temple" written by the famous calligrapher Feng ri'an, and on the back door is a horizontal plaque with the inscription of "three continents induction". There are couplets on both sides. The first couplet is "the holy sign calls down and lets the fire cave be robbed, but the furnace is in the cave". The second couplet is "the magic skill is sinister, and I believe that Vajra will still exist without pestle". In the middle of the hall, there is Maitreya bodhisattva (also known as Budai monk) with clay sculpture and gold. Behind Maitreya, there is the Dharma protector Weituo Bodhisattva holding the magic wand. There are four statues of the heavenly king on both sides. That is to say, the eastern Heavenly King (huoyinduoluozha) holds the harp; the southern Heavenly King (huohuangpiliuboyi) holds the sword; the Western Heavenly King (huohuangpiliuboyi) holds a snake; the northern Heavenly King (huoyinpishan) holds the umbrella.

The four majestic vajras guard the mountain gate and protect the three treasures of Buddha, Dharma and monk. In the middle of the back yard of the main hall stands an iron casting tripod, which was cast by the master of Prajna temple and his disciples in 1984, with the four characters "Prajna speaking Temple" on it.

Facilities in the hall

Daxiong hall is located behind the Tianwang hall. Above the main hall are four gold characters of "Daxiong hall" inscribed by the famous calligrapher Huo Anrong. On the east side is a plaque of "all dharmas and emptiness". There is a couplet on the left and right red pillars of the hall door: "if it is a wonderful and solemn appearance, the Zhangling mountain meeting of the master's companion Zhai seems to have not been dispersed; originally, the Buddha is pure and holy, and the Bodhi path is now completed.". In the center of the hall is the sitting statue of Sakyamuni Buddha. On the right side is the disaster relief and longevity medicine Buddha. On the left side is Amitabha Buddha in the Western Paradise. In front of the Buddha statue of Sakyamuni, there are disciples, venerable Ananda and venerable Kaya, standing on the left and right.

The front lamps, flowers, buildings and banners are solemn. On the East and West gables of the hall, there are 16 portraits. On the windward screen behind the three Tathagata Buddha statues are the painted portraits of Guanyin Bodhisattva, Manjusri Bodhisattva and Puxian Bodhisattva, which are vivid and lifelike.

historical significance

In the second courtyard, the Sutra house is a two-story building with green bricks and tiles. There are twelve Buddhist scriptures in the building. Zushitang, located in the east courtyard of the temple, was built in 1676. The main hall is dedicated to 28 Buddhists.

Inside the hall, there was a Tang Dynasty glazed altar painted with green leaves and red peonies. It contains the remains of Zen master Gulin, the founder of Prajna temple.
