Nanyang ancient town

Nanyang ancient town is located in Weishan County, Jining City, Shandong Province. It is located in Nanyang Lake on the north side of Nansi Lake. It is composed of a main island 3500 meters long from east to west and 500 meters wide from north to South and a number of natural islands. There are 117 natural islands scattered on Nanyang Lake. In 2014, the Grand Canal of China was selected as a world cultural heritage.

Historical evolution

From the Qin and Han Dynasties to the Sui and Tang Dynasties, due to the low-lying terrain from Nanyang in the north to peiliu in the south, it has been known as peize since ancient times. Sihe river flows through the whole territory from the north to the south. Nanyang often suffers from floods and wars, which once caused the desolation of Nanyang. There is no historical record of Nanyang in this historical stage. Until 624, the canal in Shandong Province moved from west to East, leading Wensi River to Jining, and then to the South and North, flowing down the natural river, passing Nanyang, and reaching Jianghuai river through Xuzhou. By the Song Dynasty, Nanyang had become a large village on the Bank of the river.

In 1278, Wen Tianxiang wrote "fayutai" by Nanyang Town, and called it Sijiao Zhendian around Nanyang town. In 1282, when the Jizhou river was opened, Nanyang sluice was built.

Nanyang became an important commercial port on the Bank of the canal after the navigation of the north and South Grand Canal in the 30th year of the Yuan Dynasty (1293). In the 2nd year of the Yuan Dynasty (1331), Nanyang sluice was rebuilt on the Beijing Hangzhou Grand Canal, which overlapped with the ancient Surabaya. From then on, Nanyang became famous. By the middle of Ming Dynasty, Nanyang had become one of the four famous towns (Xiazhen, Zhenjiang and Yangzhou) along the ancient Yunhe river. The name of the town can be seen in the inscription of rebuilding Zhengjue temple in 1550. It was in the early Qing Dynasty that Nanyang town changed from land to island in the lake. For decades, Nanyang, a prosperous canal wharf and market town, was constantly attacked and threatened by the North-South counter current. Sometimes it was besieged and sometimes flooded, forcing the local terrain to improve continuously to avoid sinking. Nanyang town is finally located at the junction of Zhaoyang lake, Dushan lake and Nanyang Lake. It is surrounded by water on both banks of the canal, with the wide canal river as the "street", showing its unique natural landscape.

Location context

Nanyang ancient town, about 40 kilometers away from Jining City, is located in Nanyang Lake in the north of Weishan. The ancient Beijing Hangzhou Grand Canal passes through the town. The ancient town is close to Jining City in the north, three metropolitan areas in Shandong Province, North Jiangsu Province in the south, Qufu and Zoucheng, the hometown of Confucius and Mencius in the East, Heze, the hometown of peony in the west, and Nanyang town is 30 kilometers away from Beijing Fuzhou Expressway and 60 kilometers away from Jining airport.

Nanyang ancient town has a warm temperate monsoon continental climate. The annual average temperature is 13.7 ℃, the extreme maximum temperature is 40.5 ℃, and the minimum temperature is - 22.3 ℃. The average annual precipitation is 79.7mm. The frost free period is 205 days per year.

Yuehe Range Rover

Yuehe River, located near Nanyang gate, is not only the place where the management and transportation of the canal is located, but also the indispensable water conservancy facilities on the canal. Canal culture with a long history

Nanyang ancient town is the most distinctive historical town along the Weishan Lake canal. In ancient times, towns were built on canals. In 1331, Nanyang sluice was built here and the town was built. In 1567, the first year of Longqing in the Ming Dynasty, the new canal for water transport was completed, and Nanyang became a wharf for transporting goods. Later, in Ming and Qing Dynasties, Nanyang "fishing boats, wine boats, merchant ships, rice flour boats, connected with each other, surrounded by eaves and masts, like a market". In its heyday, Nanyang town had more than ten places of interest, such as Imperial Palace (existing), Huangliang hall, Erye temple, ancient canal gate, Kuixing tower, Wengong temple, Dayu temple, Yangjia memorial archway, non stick flagpole and so on. The Qing government had set up a garrison and a river management office here. When Emperor Qianlong went down to Jiangnan, he also stayed in the town with admiration, and Yaxing inscribed a plaque for Majiadian. The threshold he passed was treasured for 230 years. These descriptions and existing monuments fully reflect the characteristics of Nanyang canal culture.
