The officers and soldiers stationed on the island made some sea turtles and collected shellfish into specimens for centralized display.
Development history
Xisha Ocean Museum was founded in 1989. There are many specimens of marine life on display in the museum. The "peacock neck fin fish" with peacock spots on its body, the "horseshoe snail" with horseshoe like bottom and pyramid like shape, the sea cucumber "Mei Hua Shen" with plum like blossom, and various fish specimens, coral flowers and stone flowers with different shapes make the whole exhibition hall full of beauty and endless interest.
The officers and soldiers stationed on the island made some sea turtles and collected shellfish into specimens and displayed them intensively to express their determination and emotion to love the island, the ocean, Xisha and the protection of marine resources, and also to inject interest into island life.
In January 1990, Admiral Liu Huaqing, former vice chairman of the Central Military Commission, personally wrote the title of the Museum: Naval Xisha marine museum. The establishment of Xisha Ocean Museum has received strong support from leaders at all levels and relevant personnel. Many generals, experts and local leaders presented their collected marine biological specimens to Xisha; professionals from Zhanjiang City and Hainan Provincial Department of Oceanography also gave specific technical guidance.
In October 2000, Xisha troops expanded the marine museum. On New Year's Day 2001, the new museum officially opened to welcome the new century with a new look. The expanded exhibition hall covers an area of about 800 square meters. It is divided into eight halls, including picture and text hall, haishihua hall, turtle and lobster hall, and marine fish specimen hall. There are more than 400 kinds of marine specimens and more than 3000 pieces of picture materials.
Today, Xisha Ocean Museum has become one of the important scenic spots in Sansha city. It is an important place for people to understand the ocean, Xisha and the officers and soldiers in Xisha. It is also the second classroom for officers and soldiers to carry out marine knowledge education and cultivate marine concepts.
