Drum wave stone. On Meihua beach in the southwest of Gulangyu Island, there are three or five reefs in Haohai, one of which is about six or seven meters high. The middle part of the reef is eroded into a big hole like a door by the waves.

At present, it is believed that the ancient sea waves beat this stone on the beach, and over time, the stone was washed out of a hole, and then formed a door hole. This stone, together with poetic legends, makes it more attractive.

It is said that the name of Gulangyu Island comes from a reef along the coast of Gulangyu Island. In the Tang and Song Dynasties, Gulangyu Island was called "yuanshazhou" and "yuanzhouzi" because of its oval shape, surrounded by sand beaches. At that time, the island was full of boulders and lush grass, but it was desolate.

Because of the wind when fishing at sea, they went to the round sandbank to avoid the wind and waves. After a long time, more and more fishermen came here to take shelter, forming the "Licuo Ao" community, which is now the "neicuoao" block. Xiamen dialect is homonymous with Li and Nei, and neicuo'ao evolved from Li cuo'ao.

By the Ming Dynasty, there were more and more people living on yuanshazhou, and temples were built. It is found that there is a huge rock standing on the beach in the southwest of the island. There is a big cave in the middle. When the tide rises and falls, when the waves beat the cave, it makes a sound in winter, just like beating a drum. People call it "drum wave stone", and the round sandbar has been renamed "Gulangyu" since then. In the first year of Wanli in the Ming Dynasty (1573 AD), Ding Yizhong of Quanzhou Prefecture wrote "Gulang Dongtian" on the rock at the top of the island, indicating that Gulang island was already a famous tourist area at that time!
