Wuwei Desert Park

Wuwei Desert Park (AAAA level) is located at the edge of Tengger Desert, 22 kilometers east of Wuwei city. It was founded in 1986 and covers an area of 12000 mu. It is the first park established in the desert in China and is known as "the first park in Shahai". It has become a national AAAA tourist attraction integrating desert scenery, grassland customs and garden elegance.

The main scenic spots are artificial lake, karting yard, yurt resort, sand botanical garden, swimming pool, Yuanyang Pavilion, horse racing field, peach blossom Pavilion, sand skating field, 4WD cross-country car park, etc.

Development history

The desert park is 22 kilometers away from Wuwei city. It used to be a continuous sand dune.

Since 1972, more than 1.5 million trees and 5 million sandy shrubs have been planted here, forming two strong windbreak belts, fixing the mobile sand dunes and becoming a green ocean;

In 1987, Wuwei people created a new way and built a desert park on this basis;

In 1994, desert park introduced more than 350 species of Psammophytes from all over the world, and built a scientific and interesting Psammophyte garden.

Main attractions

The desert park has built a swimming pool covering an area of 4000 square meters, a 32 meter high viewing tower, a horse racing course, a camel racing course, a sand bath, a desert Pavilion, a Taoxin Pavilion, a mandarin duck Pavilion, a peach blossom Pavilion and other entertainment facilities.

In the park, the sand dunes are undulating, the grass is overgrown, and there are sand plants such as Haloxylon ammodendron, birch, red willow, Shami, pengke, etc. After that, experts and professors from the Department of geography of Lanzhou University were invited to redesign and further improve it, so as to make it a desert park integrating sand control achievements, tourism and fitness, culture and entertainment.

In the desert park, which covers an area of 8 million square meters, more than 20 varieties and more than 5 million sand plants are planted, with a greening rate of more than 80%. Looking around, the garden is full of Magnolia, Tamarix hispida, Elaeagnus angustifolia, Lycium barbarum, Nitraria, flower stick, etc.

Walking in the park, the water is green, the tourists are chasing the waves, and the trees around the pool are beautiful, which will make people completely forget that this is a desert. Outside the park, there are thousands of hectares of sand sea and the ancient Great Wall in the sand sea. Visitors can enjoy both the oasis and the desert.

Psammophyte

In the desert park, there are not only ash, toon, willow and Xanthoceras sorbifolia, but also rare and endangered desert plants, such as baodaning, Capparis spinosa, Ilex mongolica, Cyclobalanopsis glauca, etc. In addition to the introduction from Hexi Corridor, many Psammophytes are early plants and ornamental plants from home and abroad. There are Calligonum mongolicum in Algeria, early oil melon in Lebanon, water ZCC thistle in Germany, etc.

Speciality Foods

If visitors come in summer and autumn, they can taste Shami jelly and Minqin melon.
