Danfengmen Street

Danfeng gate is the south main gate of Daming Palace. It is the south main gate of Hanyuan palace, more than 400 steps away. According to the literature, the Louguan on the gate is called "Danfeng tower". Danfeng gate was built in 662 when Daming Palace was built. At the same time of building danfengmen, the North-South Street facing danfengmen was opened up, with a width of "120 steps", equivalent to 176 meters, much wider than Zhuque street, which is 151 meters wide and is the widest road in Chang'an city.

Danfengmen Street

Danfengmen street is the main street of danfengmen, the main gate of Daming Palace, which is one of the three inner walls of Chang'an City (Taiji palace, Daming Palace and Xingqing Palace) in Sui and Tang Dynasties. Danfengmen street is 176 meters wide, wider than Zhuque street in Chang'an City, and is the widest street in the world.

At the same time of building danfengmen, the North-South Street facing danfengmen was opened up, with a width of "120 steps", equivalent to 176 meters, much wider than Zhuque street, which is 151 meters wide and is the widest road in Chang'an city. The danfengmen street crosses the Dongxi street in Tonghua gate in the south. As danfengmen Street passes through guangzhai and Yongchang square in front of the palace, there are four small square shaped like "Tian" - guangzhai square in the northwest, Yongchang square in the southwest, Yishan square in the northeast and Laiting square in the southeast. As danfengmen Street passes through the original guangzhai and Yongchang two squares, the location is not in the middle street of the square, but in the East, so the four small squares after transformation, of which the northwest and southwest two squares are slightly larger, and the northeast and Southeast two squares are slightly smaller.

The Danfeng gate was usually closed and not easy to use. It was only opened when the emperor held a Grand Court in Hanyuan hall. Zhang Hu, an official at that time, wrote the poem "battle of the Yuan Dynasty", describing the grand occasion of the great dynasty

"Thousands of civil and military officers and soldiers are fighting, and all sides are on the same track; the emperor's first imperial palace is Hanyuan, and the Danfeng gate is open day by day."

If we only look at the site of five gateways and piers of danfengmen, we can see that it is an imitation of Mingdemen, the masterpiece of Yu Wenkai, the imperial architect of the Sui Dynasty. In terms of its scale, it should be innovative.

The floor structure of Danfeng gate, Danfeng tower, is the essence of the palace gate.

Because the gate of the palace is too big, the pier is 74.50 meters long from east to west. According to the height of four to one, the top of the pier is 70.82 meters long from east to west, about 24 feet in the Tang Dynasty. This is about the East-West length of the base of Danfeng building. The rammed earth main steps of Hanyuan hall in Zhengya are about 60 meters long from east to west, and the wooden auxiliary steps are only 67.64 meters long (including 58.21 meters wide from east to West). The East-West length of the foundation of Danfeng building is 70.82 meters. If the wooden flat seat is slightly picked out above, the width of the gate tower is still 70.82 meters, which is larger than the main hall Hanyuan hall, which violates the rules of the court. Therefore, the shape of Danfeng building must be divided into parts, which is shorter than that of Hanyuan hall, with left and right protection, so that the combined shape can reach 70.82 meters. This kind of architectural combination, Dunhuang murals provide us with evidence. It is speculated that there are nine main buildings and two on each side, totally 13. As shown in the mural of cave 138 of the late Tang Dynasty in Dunhuang, the roof of the main building and the roof of the shelter are of the four note type; the Ming Dynasty buildings are not enlarged, and if each room is set at 5.20 meters, the thirteen rooms are about 68 meters, which is 23 feet and 1 foot in the Tang Dynasty. The depth of the bay is set at 4.50 meters, and that of the five bays is 22.50 meters, which is seven feet and six feet and five inches.
