In 1959, Yiyuan built a garden style exhibition hall for North Korea and Vietnam on the opposite side of China Export Commodities Fair in Haizhu Square. Zhou Enlai, then Premier of China, proposed to name this place Yiyuan, hence the name.

In 1974, with the approval of the Guangdong provincial government, Yiyuan (about 2000 square meters) was allocated to the special venue of Guangzhou Science and Technology Commission for holding science and technology exhibitions and exchanges.

In 1980, the first "foreign electronic products exhibition" in Guangdong Province was held in Yiyuan. Through this window, the people of Guangdong had the first large-scale and close contact with and learned about the advanced technology and level of foreign countries.
