Hou Zai men Christian Church
Historical evolution
The church is a European style building, built in 1937, originally belonging to the American Baptist Church (abbreviated as the American Baptist Church), originally a clinic of the church. In 1937, the Japanese army occupied Jinan, and divided Jinan into "commercial port area" and "outer city area". The "commercial port area" is the inner city, and the "outer city area" is Nanguan, Dongguan, Beiguan, etc. Christian believers in the old city went to the church outside the city to worship. When they came out of the city, they had to salute the Japanese who were guarding the city according to the regulations of the Japanese army. The believers found it difficult to accept it psychologically, so the congregation discussed to build a church in the old city. At that time, may, an American believer in Jinan, invested 10000 yuan to buy two houses on the basis of the church clinic and built a chapel. At that time, the chapel was 10 meters wide from east to west and 15 meters long from north to south. After the completion of the church, American Southern Baptist priest John took charge of church affairs.
After the founding of new China and the withdrawal of American priests, Chinese priests took over church affairs. In the second half of 1958, the church stopped meeting because of the United Church. It was reopened in 1964. Until the beginning of the cultural revolution, the church had been holding normal religious activities. During the cultural revolution, the church was forced to close and became an office dormitory. In 1985, the government returned the church property and resumed religious activities on Easter in April 1986. In April 1993, the church transformed the chapel into a two-tier structure, which can accommodate about 600 people. As Houzaimen church is located in the eastern cultural area of Quancheng, it often receives foreign Christian groups who come to Jinan and foreign believers who live in Jinan also come here to gather.
