Tin Hau Temple in Sham Shui Po

Tin Hau Temple, Sham Shui Po, 180-184 Yikui street, Sham Shui Po, Kowloon. In addition to Tin Hau, the temple also worships Taisui, Guanyin and Baogong.

Historical evolution

Sham Shui Po used to be a gathering place for fishing boats. The fishermen believed that God's power could ensure the smooth weather, so they believed in Empress Dowager and raised funds to build this temple in 1901 (the 27th year of the reign of Emperor Guangxu of the Qing Dynasty). At that time, the temple faced the sea and had excellent Feng Shui. Later, due to the development of the community, the temple was surrounded by many buildings.

The temple was rebuilt in 1915 and 1990.

Architectural pattern

The architectural pattern of the temple is quite special, which is similar to that of Wudi temple in Haitan street. A pair of Suzhou embroidered wooden screens are still on the middle door. The main hall of the temple is in the back, and there are side halls on the left and right, which is quite large in the urban area.

Historical relics

In 1913 (the second year of the Republic of China), the three characters of "Tian Hou Temple" at the main gate of the temple and the couplet "Bai Yue Zhusheng Ling Avenue is the public, Xifu opens the house from Tianhong; the group of worshippers from all directions is born in Youlu, Huanbo, Haiqing and Anlan".

Other related

Empress dowager, also known as Mazu, was originally from Fujian Province. Her name was Lin Mo Niang. It is said that she was born with a special talent. When she was 13 years old, she met a founder who taught her everything, knew the future, and helped her to get sick. It is said that she often traveled to the sea by a reed mat to save some drowning people. People respected her as a God to protect the safety of the sea and built a temple to commemorate her.

Every year, the 23rd day of March in the lunar calendar is Tian Hou's birthday.
