Qingdao Catholic Church

The original name of Qingdao Catholic Church is Saint Miguel church, Zhejiang Road, Qingdao diocese. (some reports say: St. Emile's Church), the Catholic St. Emile's Cathedral in Qingdao started construction in 1932. It covers an area of 11480 square meters, of which the building area is 6301.54 square meters. The church is built of yellow granite and reinforced concrete, and the surface is carved with simple and beautiful patterns. The window is a semicircle arch with smooth lines and appears solemn and simple. A huge rose window is set above the gate, and a clock tower stands on both sides. The tower is 56 meters tall. A huge cross with a height of 4.5 meters is erected on the conical spire covered by red tiles. There are four big bells hanging in the tower. Once the bell music is played, the sound will be heard several miles away. Entering the church, it is a spacious and bright hall with a height of 18 meters and a capacity of 1000 people. The colorful glass windows transmit soft light. There are corridors on the East and west sides of the hall, two large sacrificial platforms and four small sacrificial platforms at the back. The dome of the hall is painted with holy image murals, with dazzling lights and a strong religious atmosphere. The roof is covered with red tiles with tongue, which is huge, simple and elegant.

The decoration of the church is in the form of Italian Renaissance. The hall is 18 meters high, spacious and bright. There are seven large chandeliers hanging on the ceiling. There is an altar in the rear. With the sacred image murals on the dome, it can be called solemn and beautiful. It can accommodate thousands of believers. It is the largest Gothic architecture in Qingdao, the only consecration Church in China, and a masterpiece of Christian Architectural art.

Historical evolution

During the cultural revolution, the church was seriously damaged and was restored to use in April 1981. In June 1992, it was listed as a key cultural relic protection unit at the provincial level.
