Xidan

Xidan is a commercial block in Xicheng District of Beijing. Xidan gets its name from Xidan archway in old Beijing. With Xidan intersection as the center, there are many commercial facilities along Xidan Cultural Square and Xidan North Street. The origin of the name

Xidan's name comes from a archway named "Zhanyun". In Dongcheng District, there is also a archway at the present Dongdan intersection, which is named "on the day". Because they are single archways, and the East and the West are opposite, they are commonly known as Xidan archway and Dongdan archway. In the north of Xidan and Dongdan, there is a intersection of four archways, so it is called Xidan archway and Dongsi archway. Xidan archway was demolished in 1923.

On the eve of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, Xidan archway was rebuilt in the renovation of Xidan Cultural Square, and the new archway moved slightly northward than in history.
