Danshi courtyard
Lao She, a native of Manchu and Peking, was born at No. 8, xiaoyangjia Hutong, west of huguosi street in Xicheng.
When the Eight Power Allied forces attacked Beijing, Lao She's father was a soldier guarding the red flag of Qianmen building. After being burned by the shell, he went to a grain store in xihuamen, and his whereabouts were unknown. In April 1950, Lao She went to his publishing agent in the United States to remit us $500 in royalties. With this money, he converted it into 100 pieces of cloth and bought a 400 square meter courtyard at No. 10 (now No. 19) of Fu Fu Fu Hutong, naizifu street. In late autumn, the branches of the courtyard are decorated with golden persimmons. Therefore, Lao she named the courtyard "Danshi courtyard" and lived here for 16 years.
In the early morning of August 24, 1966, Mr. Lao She came home and walked out of the "Danshi courtyard" alone. At night, he committed suicide by throwing himself into Taiping Lake outside the northwest corner of Beijing. According to Shu Yi, Lao She's son, the 1968 Nobel Prize for literature was originally awarded to Lao She, but it was awarded to Yasunari Kawabata for his suicide.
