Bo Fulin
Pok Fu Lam is located in the western part of Hong Kong Island. It spans the central and western districts and the Southern District. It is one of the suburban parts of Hong Kong Island, with the north to the mount Davis and the mid levels and the south to Aberdeen. Most of Pok Fu Lam is divided into Pok Fu Lam constituency (D11) in the Southern District, and the rest is scattered in the western and central districts.
geographical position
To the north of Pok Fu Lam is Mok sing Ling Road, which borders the central and western regions. It extends southward along Pokfulam Road and the West Bank of Hong Kong Island to the area of Wah Fu estate. It covers Shawan (Dakou Bay) and gangxianwan.
Originally, pofulin only refers to the area near pofulin village, and then gradually developed into the area along pofulin road. Although the area near pokfulan village belongs to the Southern District administratively, in the past, most of the people living in pokfulan (mainly near the University of Hong Kong) were in the central and Western District in a broad sense, and some people mistakenly thought it belonged to the central and western district. As a matter of fact, in the past, many places belonging to Pok Fu Lam in the broad sense were classified into the peak constituency (A04) and University constituency (A05) of central and western district.
Place name source
Bofulin was called baibulin in ancient times. Because this area used to be a dense forest, there are many birds called Bofu, so it is also called Bofu forest. Later, the place name was written as bofulin, which is still in use today. It was also written as park lake forest before the Second World War.
history
The history of pofulin village in pofulin can be traced back to the rebellion of San Francisco in the reign of Emperor Kangxi of the Qing Dynasty. More than 2000 people took refuge from other areas and became the earliest indigenous residents of Hong Kong Island. In the annals of Xin'an County compiled in the 24th year of Jiaqing (1819), it was mentioned that bofulin village is one of the two villages on Hong Kong Island (the other is Hong Kong Wai in huangzhukeng). After the handover of Hong Kong's political power, the local residents had repeatedly asked the government to give them the same rights and interests as the original residents of the new territories. However, they were rejected by the government and faced the fate of being demolished.
Around 1860, bofulin was called "bohulin". It was a summer resort for British businessmen. There were many villas on the hillside and on the top of the mountain. There were several watchmen's houses on the top of the mountain. There were flagpoles outside. When a ship arrived at the port, the watchman raised the flag. There is a racecourse near bohulin. Every time Meng Chun raced, there were many ladies. The governor of Hong Kong also created a bohulin park covering an area of 100 hectares.
In 1883, Pok Fu Lam reservoir, the first reservoir in Hong Kong, was completed to provide tap water for Hong Kong. The spring water comes from Taiping mountain and is piped to the reservoir. In 1885, the Hong Kong dairy company built a ranch near Pokfulam village, which is the current site of Chifu garden. It is called Pokfulam ranch. It is the first ranch in Hong Kong. In 1911, the University of Hong Kong, located to the north of Pokfulam, was founded, attracting many staff and students to live in Pokfulam district. Up to now, there are still many dormitories of the University of Hong Kong in Pokfulam. In 1937, Mary Hospital was opened. At that time, it was known as "the largest hospital in the Far East". Until now, it is still one of the most important hospitals in Hong Kong.
