Historical evolution

Zhanjiang Medical College

In 1958, Zhanjiang Branch of Zhongshan Medical College was established.

In 1964, the University was upgraded to a five-year undergraduate medical college and renamed Zhanjiang medical college.

In January 1970, the Affiliated Hospital of Zhanjiang Medical College officially received patients.

In 1985, the State Education Commission approved the school to recruit 7 postgraduates majoring in pathophysiology, biochemistry and surgery (plastic surgery).

In 1986, the University obtained the right to confer master's degrees in seven disciplines.

In 1991, the University was listed as the key construction University of Guangdong Province for three consecutive five-year plans.

Guangdong Medical College

In 1992, the school changed its name to Guangdong Medical College.

In September 1996, the University cooperated with Osaka Institute of high technology and Osaka Institute of medical technology.

In October 2002, Guangdong Provincial Department of Education approved Guangdong Medical University to set up Dongguan campus; in November of the same year, the school set up a leading group to prepare for the construction of Dongguan campus, and set up a preparatory construction office; on December 12, the foundation of Dongguan campus was laid.

In February 2003, the construction of Dongguan campus was broken. On October 23 of the same year, the first batch of Freshmen in Dongguan campus successfully enrolled.

In 2009, the University was listed by Guangdong Province as a new doctoral degree awarding unit within the national quota.

In 2013, the University was approved as a doctoral degree awarding unit.

In June 2015, the University applied to change its name to "Guangdong Medical University".

On March 22, 2016, the Ministry of Education officially approved the renaming of Guangdong Medical College as Guangdong Medical University.
