Hu Wenhu building

Hu Wenhu building, located at 69 Minzu Road, Jinping District, Shantou City, Guangdong Province, was built in 1927.

Sitting from northwest to Southeast, it covers an area of about 480 square meters, with a construction area of 1422.7 square meters, a width of 50.63 meters and a depth of 28.1 meters. The main body is a reinforced concrete structure with a fan-shaped appearance. It has three floors, and from the fourth floor to the top is a cylindrical watchtower, which belongs to the arcade type and is a combination of Chinese and Western architecture. The building is the first tallest European style building in the early days of Shantou port opening. Its window lattice, roof edge, watchtower outer wall and other parts are decorated with relief patterns, delicate and exquisite. On its southeast side, there is a square annex building, with a width of 12.7 meters and a depth of 8 meters. There are spiral stairs leading to the top floor inside the watchtower, and a long lightning rod is installed on the top of the watchtower. The building of yongantang pharmaceutical factory is a complete European style arcade in Shantou City. At present, the first floor of the building is the rental shop of Shantou Motor Transport Corporation, and the second floor is the residence of employees of Shantou Shipping Bureau and Waterway Bureau.

The building has witnessed the development history of news, education, medical and health care, charity and public welfare since the opening of Shantou port. It is of high value for the study of Shantou port opening history, architectural history, industrial history, historical celebrities and European architecture. According to the records of Shantou local chronicles, in 1927, Hu Wenhu, the "king of all kinds of gold oil", invested in Shantou to set up yong'antang pharmaceutical factory, which produced tiger label all kinds of gold oil and other drugs, and sold well in China and Southeast Asia. Mr. Hu Wenhu is not only a famous overseas Chinese entrepreneur and journalist, but also a famous patriotic overseas Chinese leader and philanthropist. As early as the 1920s and 1930s, he had invested and set up public welfare undertakings in Shantou. Dr. Hu Xian, the daughter of Mr. Hu Wenhu, also donated money to build a new Shantou Museum.

The site was announced as the fourth batch of cultural relics protection units in Shantou City in May 2010, named Hu Wenhu building.
