The red brick house was completed in 1895 as the engineer's office of Shanghai Street pumping station. It is the oldest existing water works building in Hong Kong. After the pumping station ceased operation in 1911, different parts of the building were demolished or converted to other uses. Only the red brick house remained and was rated as a class I historical building by the antiquities Committee in 2000.
