Baihui Garden

Mulan Garden

Tropics and subtropics

The two tropical and subtropical plant exhibition greenhouses, covering an area of more than 1000 square meters each, are specially built by Xi'an Botanical Garden to make up for the lack of continental climate for some southern plants who are afraid of cold. Xi'an Botanical Garden has nine special areas: medicinal plant area, aquatic plant area, flower area, oil plant area, aromatic plant area, monocotyledon plant area, dicotyledon plant area, gymnosperm plant area and magnolia garden; two tropical and subtropical plant exhibition greenhouses of more than 1000 square meters each and Cuihua garden with Japanese garden style. In 1993, Xi'an Botanical Garden took the lead in holding tulip flower exhibition nationwide, which opened the prelude of tulip blooming in China.

Since its establishment, Xi'an Botanical Garden has always taken basic research, plant introduction and domestication, germplasm conservation and popularization of scientific and technological knowledge as its main tasks. It has made important contributions in maintaining the diversity of plants in the western region, saving and protecting rare and endangered plants, environmental education and popularization of science.

Historical evolution

In 1958, according to the instructions of the State Council on strengthening the utilization of wild economic plant resources and the spirit of the Chinese Academy of Sciences on vigorously developing the National Botanical Garden Network, Xi'an Botanical Garden began to be established. After many times of investigation in Xi'an, the garden site was finally selected to the south of Dayan Pagoda, with an area of 20hm2. The important factors to determine the site of the garden are that the terrain is high in the north and low in the south, which is suitable for plant configuration and landscaping. Moreover, the site is mostly multi-year cemetery and dry land, which has little impact on agricultural cultivation. At the same time of site selection, more than 50 comrades were sent to Qinling to transplant more than 10000 wild useful seedlings after 10 days.

In 1959, with the approval of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Shaanxi Provincial People's government and Xi'an Municipal People's government, Xi'an Botanical Garden was officially established. Xi'an Botanical Garden is one of the first eight botanical gardens established in China after the founding of the people's Republic of China. It was also a botanical garden built in Northwest China at that time.

In April 1963, a planning meeting attended by experts and responsible comrades from Northwest Agricultural College, fruit tree Research Institute, Shaanxi Normal University, northwest Design Institute, Xi'an Landscape Department and Xi'an Urban Construction Bureau was held in the park. A special discussion on the planning of our park was carried out, and it was confirmed that the landscape scale of our park was 720 mu, which was designed by Xi'an Design Institute, and a preliminary plan was put forward.

In 1964, with the approval of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Xi'an Botanical Garden became an independent research institution with the name of "Xi'an Botanical Garden, Chinese Academy of Sciences". The research team made corresponding adjustments, integrating the original classification, ecology, resource plants, greenhouse and seedling room into three groups, namely flora group, economic plant group and planning and construction group.
