Historical evolution

Pre Qin Period

The history of Qufu Confucius Temple can be traced back to the second year of Confucius' death, that is, the 42nd year of King Jing of Zhou Dynasty (the 17th year of Duke AI of Lu, 478 BC). The specifications of the ancestral temple are in accordance with the ritual system of the Zhou Dynasty: "seven temples for the son of heaven, five temples for the princes, three temples for the officials, one temple for the scholars, and no temple for the common people." The temples of the literati and the officialdom were set in the east side of their residence, which was the same as the gate of the residence. When Confucius was in politics in the state of Lu, he was the highest "big Sikou", but he did not return to politics after he traveled all over the world, so his identity is still "Buyi".

In fact, the temple established by later generations is different from the common rites. The reason why a temple is built is because the former residence is the most attractive. The original purpose of setting up the temple was to commemorate Confucius by collecting the clothes, cars and harps he had worn in his former residence. There is no record of the layout of Confucius Temple at this time, so it can only be inferred that there are three temples.

Han Dynasty

In November of the 12th year of emperor Gaozu of the Han Dynasty (195b.c.), Emperor Gaozu Liu Bang returned to Beijing from Huainan. After passing through the palace, he sacrificed to Confucius in the ethereal prison. The emperor was the first to offer sacrifices to Confucius. In the first year of the Yuan Dynasty (1 year), Emperor Hanping posthumously named Confucius as "Baocheng xuanni Gong", and all the descendants of Confucius were the Marquis of Baocheng and worshipped him.

Since then, more and more attention has been paid to Confucius Temple. In the 29th year of Jianwu in the Eastern Han Dynasty, Emperor Guangwu passed the palace and ordered him to sacrifice to Confucius. Emperor Ming, Emperor Zhang and Emperor an all went to Qufu to offer sacrifices.

In the first year of Yongxing (153), Emperor Huan of the Han Dynasty issued an imperial edict to rebuild the Confucius Temple, appointed Kong he as the temple official, and erected a stele to record it. In the Han Dynasty, although the temple had been renovated many times, the house was still used as the temple. In the last years of the Eastern Han Dynasty, the world was in chaos, and "the temples of the old houses were destroyed but not repaired. After they were praised for their success, they could not follow them, they could not hear the sound of recitation, and they could not see the position of steaming and tasting in the four seasons.",

So the Confucius Temple fell.

Wei, Jin, southern and Northern Dynasties

During the period of Wei, Jin, southern and Northern Dynasties, the society was turbulent. Although metaphysics rose and Buddhism prevailed, Confucius' reverence status was not greatly affected. Emperor Wen of Wei ordered Lu prefecture to build old temples,

They also built houses outside the temple to house scholars.

At the end of the Western Jin Dynasty, the temple was built in disorder, and its appearance was desolate.

In 539, Emperor Xiaojing of the Eastern Wei Dynasty made great efforts to maintain the Confucius Temple and made the first statue of Confucius and his disciples. Since then, the Confucian temples have been repaired in the first year of Tianbao (550) and the second year of Taiping (557), but the shape of the temple has not changed.

Sui and Tang Dynasties

In 581, the first year of Emperor Wen of the Sui Dynasty, Confucius was regarded as "the father of Confucius".

In 637, Emperor Taizong of Tang Dynasty ordered Yanzhou to build Confucius Temple in que Li. In the first year of Qianfeng (666), Emperor Gaozong ordered Li Yuangui, the governor of Yanzhou, to "transform the temple" for the first time because of the shabby old temple.

This expansion has expanded the original scope of the Confucius Temple. Although it is still based on "three rooms in the Temple House", the courtyard and appearance have been greatly improved. The building adopts multi-layer fighting chess, with windows on the wall and walking Corridor around it. Outside the wall of the temple, an outer wall was added according to the schedule. The southeast corner is close to the wall of the old Yanggong palace, the northeast corner is built at the remnant of Lingguang palace, and the northwest corner is built at the wall of the former Bangong palace in Lucheng (that is, the intersection of Qipan street, yuelonghu street in qufucheng), with a length of more than 200 meters in East, West, North and south. The gate of Confucius' house is the gate of temple and house in Tang Dynasty,

There is another temple gate on the west side, adjacent to the road in the south, leading to guide gate on the west wall of Lucheng city in the West. Confucius Temple was built on the site of Lingguang hall.

In 719, the seventh year of Kaiyuan reign of Emperor Xuanzong of Tang Dynasty, Wei Yuangui, the governor of Yanzhou, and Kong Feng, the 35th generation grandson of Confucius, the Marquis of Baosheng, also "built walls to defend themselves.".

According to the "Song Wangli temple system" in the book "the great records of Confucius' ancestral court", it is speculated that the main hall of Confucius Temple at that time was probably changed to five rooms wide, dedicated to Confucius. The statue of Confucius is in the center, facing the north and the south. It is dressed in the clothes of the king and covered with the clothes of the Confucianists. There is also a sitting statue of Bu Zhe. After the main hall, a new bedroom hall was built to serve the wife of Confucius, and the Shuliang doctor hall was built on the west side to serve the parents of Confucius. In the 27th year of Kaiyuan (739) of Emperor Xuanzong of Tang Dynasty, his posthumous title was "King Wen Xuan".

In 773, Meng Xiujian, governor of Yanzhou, and Pei Youxiang, magistrate of Qufu County, built a new temple gate. In the 10th year of Xiantong (869), Kong Wenyu, the 39th generation grandson of Confucius, the Duke of Lu and the governor of Tianping army, invited the imperial court to offer his private salary to repair the temple. The Confucius Temple in Tang Dynasty has begun to take shape, and it has been repaired five times.

Northern Song Dynasty

The Northern Song Dynasty worshipped Confucianism and Taoism. At the beginning of Taizu's founding, he went to Qufu to pay homage and ordered the temples to be built. In the first year of Jianlong (960), an imperial edict was issued to add temples. In the third year of Jianlong (962), the imperial edict was also issued to offer sacrifices to the Confucius Temple. The temple was decorated with 16 halberds. In 983, Emperor Taizong of the Song Dynasty renovated the Confucius Temple.

The newly built Confucius Temple is "surrounded by clouds and flying eaves",

With the opening of the heavy gate and the special rise of the storey que, "the cloister and the hall will be restored and reformed.".

In the first year of Dazhong Xiangfu (1008), Emperor Zhenzong of the Song Dynasty visited the Confucius Temple in Qufu and posthumously named Confucius as "Xuansheng Wenxuan king";

In the next year, he "awarded the Confucius Temple Huan GUI Yi, crowned nine diaos, served nine chapters, and went up to the metric system.";

In the fourth year of Dazhong Xiangfu (1011), song Zhenzong ordered all States to build Confucius temples; in the fifth year of Dazhong Xiangfu (1012), song Zhenzong changed his posthumous title to Confucius as "the most holy king of culture and publicity".

In the second year of Tianxi (1018), the 45th generation grandson of Confucius and the Prime Minister of Dali Temple wrote: "the ancestral temple is humble, please repair it.",

The imperial court appointed officials to supervise the construction of Confucius Temple. In the fifth year of emperor Tianxi's reign (1021), the Confucius Temple was enlarged by "asking for the remaining materials of Fengchan Xingdian". After expansion, the temple has four courtyards in front and back, and three roads in the East, the middle and the West are parallel. In 1037, the lecture hall was built. The following year, Confucius built Wuxian hall in the west of the main hall.

In the sixth year of Jiayou reign (1061), Emperor Renzong of the Song Dynasty awarded the plaques of "Xuansheng Temple" and "Dacheng hall" written on silk. Since then, Confucius temples have been rebuilt in the years of Yuanfeng, Shaosheng and Zhenghe. In the first year of Yuanyou (1086), a temple was built in the southeast corner of the Confucius Temple. In the fourth year of Chongning (1105), Emperor Huizong of the Song Dynasty awarded Confucius the statue of "the one who uses the crown and clothing system as the king, with twelve crowns and nine seals on the crown and clothing system".

Jin and Yuan Dynasties

Soon after Huizong of the Song Dynasty, Jin soldiers invaded the south, "temples and books are ashes.".

However, the farsighted people in the upper Jin Dynasty knew that they had to rely on Confucianism to gain a foothold in the Central Plains. In 1127, after Yan Zongyao, the general of the Jin Dynasty, entered Yanjing, the Imperial Academy was established and the Imperial Academy was established. In 1129, the Jin soldiers entered Qufu
