Rolling embroidery workshop

Gunxiufang, formerly known as "gunxiufang", is a small lane along the river in the central and southern part of Suzhou city. It is one of the 65 ancient squares in Song Dynasty.

geographical position

It starts from Fenghuang street in the East, opposite to Xiatang of Daicheng bridge, ends at Wuque bridge in the west, and ends at Tuping Bridge Street in the north, opposite to Changzhou Road.

Place name allusion

Gunxiu square is an ancient square in Song Dynasty, where Yuan Jiang, a famous official, once lived. There is a "Gunxiu" archway in the alley, which has been misunderstood since then. Lu Xiong's "Suzhou Fu Zhi" and others all made the "Gunxiu" archway, because there was a "Gunxiu" archway in the alley. The pictures of Suzhou City and Wu County are marked as rolling embroidery lanes, while the pictures of Suzhou are marked as rolling embroidery lanes.

Gunxiu workshop has a long history. Yuan Jiang, a Jinshi in the fifth year of Tiansheng in Song Dynasty, was an official. His articles and political reputation were very famous. It is said that he lived in the alley after he resigned from the official and returned to his old age. Zhizhou Zhangyou for him in the west of the lane Li Gunxiu Fang, Lane hence the name. Gunxiu refers to the dress of the ancient Sangong (the most senior official). Later generations didn't know the original intention of Gunxiu, so they changed it into rolling embroidery, which made people think it was the former embroidery workshop.

Historical relics

Xiang Nei was the residence of xianhuan family. No. 6 was originally the palace of King liang of the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom, with six entrances, carved beams and painted buildings, and a back garden. No. 41 was originally Wu's Yizhuang, founded in the Ming Dynasty. After the former site, it was the children's palace in Canglang District. In the lane, there was also the former residence of you dong in Qing Dynasty. No. 26 Gu house and No. 41 Wu's Jizhi Yizhuang are listed as ancient buildings under control and protection.

Streets and alleys

The lane is 430 meters long and 6.7 meters wide. In 1982, the stone pavement was changed to cement hexagonal pavement. It is now a special-shaped slab pavement.

Walking in the rolling embroidery workshop, you will feel that this is a Suzhou lane with its own unique style. Because there is Shiquan Street beside it, except for the residents, there are not many pedestrians in the rolling embroidery workshop, which makes it very quiet. The river beside it is also a typical Suzhou Water Lane. The river goes eastward to Fengmen with Chengqiao and xingzaoqiao. It is said that in the past, farmers in Loufeng township outside the city often swayed boats to sell vegetables in the city along the river, and the riverside of gunxiufang was a temporary and spontaneous agricultural trade market.
