Louise Church

Located in the center of Donghai university campus, lusiyi church is a Christian chapel, which is the symbol of Donghai University. Its triangle appearance is simple and solemn, and the double curvature of the church overlaps to form the image of "facing the sky", just like the hands of prayer, praying for the students. Lusiyi church has always been one of the scenic spots in Taichung, so there are more people on holidays and weekends. Church also has worship activities, but generally not open to the public, so friends who visit here try not to disturb the worship!

Lu Siyi church is a church. At first, I.M. Pei wanted to build a Gothic building with bricks, but because of the earthquakes in Taiwan, he canceled the idea. Later, Chen qikuan modified the shape of the church with a hexagonal bottom like "inverted boat bottom" one by one.

brief introduction

Lu Siyi church was designed by Pei and Chen qikuan. It was built in 1963. The church is built on the open grassland between the teaching area and the student activity area of the University and occupies the central position of the whole school. It is worth mentioning that this grassland is not as flat as the usual, but has an elegant arc and gentle rise and fall, which is also one of the "environments" created by architects to maintain the natural change of the original slope as much as possible.

In his brief introduction to the design and construction of the church, Chen qikuan once described the design considerations as follows: "the church is the spirit of the whole school. For the sake of being easy to see and use, it is proposed to be a higher building and located in the center of the campus, which is the current location. The campus faces the Taichung plain in the East. You can have a panoramic view of the mountains. The church faces the East in the West. There are 450 seats in the church, half of the school's teachers and students. The seats are in the east of the church, and the altar is at the west end. The morning light comes in from the east window. When the church meets, the altar is bathed in the morning light, which is also helpful for meditation. As for the form of the church, because of the religious buildings of various countries and ages in Taixi, they all worked hard to pass on the manpower, intelligence and material resources of that time; their success and success shaped the culture of that time. Although they have been admired by later generations for thousands of years, the scene of that time can be reflected. The church in the East China Sea will also be regarded as an example, hoping to reflect the cultural tradition of our country, reveal Christ's will of universal love and sacrifice, and possess the creativity and spirit of this era. "

Architectural features

The exterior of the church is composed of four parts, which are separated from the roof ridge to form a linear skylight. The four curved roof bases and the roof ridge are straight lines on both sides. The curved surface formed is called conoid hyperboloid, which makes the eaves curve more aesthetic. Because the internal stress of the curved surface is along the curvature direction, there is no bending force in the curved surface, so the thickness of the curved surface can be reduced, and the intersecting auxiliary trabeculae are added to bear the complex structural forces.

At first, brick wall was proposed to be used as the structural material of the church, then it was proposed to be made of wood, and finally it was decided to use plastic reinforced concrete. The exterior of the church roof is made of yellow tiles, which are rich in the nature of religious architecture in China. The diamond tiles and the lattice beams crossed by the moon constitute the visual beauty echoed by the shape. There are two kinds of tiles. Every other layer of tiles has a protruding nail head, which forms a line to enhance the curvature of hyperboloid.
