Sitting sister

Sitting sister is a way of communication and love between young men and women of Dong and Miao Nationalities. In different areas of Dong nationality, they are also called playing mountain or walking village.

Dong Nationality

Playing mountain is popular in the north of Dong area. Young men and women in labor, three or five groups, meet on the slope, under the tree to sing love songs. Zou village, also known as Zou girl, is popular in the south of Dong area. Girls are spinning and sewing together in the house. Young men from Hakka village come to accompany them with musical instruments. By singing, we pour out our love to each other. When in deep love, men and women exchange notes (gifts) to make love, about for husband and wife.

Miao Nationality

Miao people's "sitting sister" is a traditional form of free social activities with the main purpose of spouse selection. There are different opinions in different places. The Miao people in Southeast Guizhou are called "Youfang", the Rongshui people in Guangxi are called "Zuomei" or "zouzhai", the northwest people in Guizhou are called "stepping on the moon", and the Miao people in Central Guizhou and some western areas are called "Tiaohua" and "tiaochang". In this kind of social activities, young men and women can sing and talk to each other in groups or individually, openly or quietly. Love in the form of couplets is the most representative and national custom in Miao marriage culture. Some Miao communities also have special places for young people to fall in love, such as youfangping in Southeast Guizhou and girl's room in Northeast Yunnan. Miao youth choose their spouse not only on property and family background, but also on personal talent and character.
