Piankou Nature Reserve

Piankou Nature Reserve is located in three townships of Piankou, Xiaoba and Kaiping, Beichuan County, Mianyang City, Sichuan Province. The reserve covers an area of 82.53 million hectares and was declared as a provincial nature reserve in 1993.

Piankou Nature Reserve is located in the west edge of Sichuan Basin, the southeast edge of Qinghai Tibet Plateau, the middle part of Minshan Mountain, the west side of Longmen, the border with suojiang and Dayin of Pingwu Sier nature reserve, the border with Duguan Qiang Township in the East, Xiaoba Qiang Tibetan Township in the South and qingpian Qiang Tibetan Township in the west, with an altitude of 1100 (renzhongling) - 3320m (hexagon top).

Apart from a small number of felled forests in the surrounding area, most of Piankou Nature Reserve has maintained its original style, and is extremely rich in biological and animal resources. There are more than 1000 species of wild plants, among which 327 species belong to 176 genera and 83 families. There are 243 species belonging to 174 genera of 61 families and 549 species of medicinal plants. There are 355 species of wild vertebrates, including 5 classes, 29 orders, 90 families; 10 species of giant panda, Sichuan snub nosed monkey, antelope and other first-class rare protected animals; 36 species of horse bear, black bear, yellow throated mink and other second-class rare protected animals.

Piankou Nature Reserve is a nature reserve mainly for the protection of giant pandas. In 2004, all Fargesia bloomed in the area above 2700 meters above sea level. The flowering range of Fargesia is gradually expanding, and it has begun to wither and die. About 19 giant pandas in this region, which mainly feed on Fargesia, will face the danger of food shortage this winter, and their survival will be seriously tested.
