Dongdashan nature reserve is a part of the north mountain of Hexi Corridor, with longitude of 100 degrees 45-100 degrees 51 and latitude of 39 degrees 0-39 degrees 04. It is 30km east of Zhangye City. Dongdashan is a fault block mountain developed since Mesozoic. It is a part of Alxa platform block and has the general characteristics of fault block mountain in large landform. All kinds of forests in the reserve are relatively complete forest ecosystems in the north mountain of Hexi corridor.

The number of blue sheep increased sharply

Dongdashan nature reserve is located 30 kilometers northeast of Ganzhou District, Zhangye City, covering an area of 5200 hectares. It is a provincial nature reserve established with the approval of the provincial government in 1980, and was assigned to Qilian Mountain National Nature Reserve in Gansu Province in 1988.

In recent years, the ecology of the nature reserve has been greatly improved, the natural forest vegetation has been restored, and the number of wild animals and plants has also increased significantly. It is understood that there are 98 species of plants belonging to 26 families in Dongdashan forest area, such as Picea crassifolia, Sabina przewalskii, Populus davidiana, Salix kaempferi, Buddleja inebriana, Stipa krylovii, etc. There are 80 species of resident birds, including 35 species of summer migratory birds, 33 species of resident birds and 12 species of migratory birds. Golden Eagle, kite and dark bellied blood chicken are listed in the first and second level national protection. Although no detailed investigation has been carried out, there are at least ten species of mammals, such as Gansu red deer and blue sheep. According to Li Gang, deputy director of Dongdashan nature reserve management station, the growth rate of national second-class protected animals in the reserve is the most obvious, with more than 3000 at present, and the density of some areas is as high as 40-60 sheep / km2. Before the station was built, the number of sheep in the whole forest area was less than 300. Forest rangers told reporters that when they patrol the mountains, they often see groups of sheep.

Blue sheep pose a threat to grassland

Luo Tianwei, deputy secretary of Dongdashan nature reserve management station, told reporters that since the implementation of the national natural forest protection project, the ecological recovery of Dongdashan Nature Reserve has been good, and the number of wild animals and plants has increased sharply, which makes forest protection personnel feel gratified. At the same time, the rapid growth of the number of blue sheep also worries them. More than 3000 blue sheep eat thousands of kilograms of forage every day. During the drought period, the phenomenon of blue sheep eating young trees and seedlings is serious, which does great harm to the nature reserve.

In this regard, some ecological workers put forward to carry out reasonable hunting activities to reduce the pressure of grassland. It is understood that Dongdashan Nature Reserve has the conditions to carry out hunting, and has held several hunting activities on a trial basis. It has successfully received 9 foreign hunting teams (19 people) from the United States, Germany, Mexico, Argentina and one domestic hunting team. It has successively killed 16 rock sheep, 5 Gansu red deer, and captured 200 rock sheep. But at present, the official international hunting activities have not been approved by the higher authorities.

Among Zhangye's meat products, in addition to hand grasping mutton and clear soup mutton, waxed mutton is well-known. Lafeng meat is mutton along the mountain. Because the sheep there eat moustache (grass name), yangcihuhua and shacong, their meat is particularly delicious. After winter, the sheep are slaughtered, cooked, boned, and cooked with Gaotai snowflake salt, Yinxiang, ginger and other seasonings. It is bright red and transparent, fat but not greasy.
