Shanhaiguan city building

Shanhaiguan city is square in plane. The east side of the city is attached to the Great Wall, surrounded by three walls in the south, North and West. The perimeter of the city is 4363.5 meters. The outer side of the city wall is covered with green bricks and filled with rammed earth. There are four gates. They are called "Zhendong" in the East, "Yingen" in the west, "Wangyang" in the South and "Weiyuan" in the north. There are three water gates, located in the southeast, southwest, northwest three corners, in order to drain the city water.

The first pass in the world is the east gate of Shanhaiguan City, also known as "zhendonglou". It is a archery tower with two floors. The top of the tower is Xieshan double eaves, the top ridge is symmetrical, and the bottom is brick and wood structure. There are 68 arrow windows on the upper and lower floors of the tower. Three wooden plaques with white ground and black characters "the first pass in the world" are hung. The first floor of the building is the original one. The plaque of "the first pass in the world" is more than 5 meters long and 1.5 meters high. Each character is more than 1 meter long. It is written in regular script with powerful writing. It can be called a masterpiece of ancient and modern times. It is said that it was written by Xiao Xian, a Jinshi in the eighth year of Chenghua (1471) of the Ming Dynasty.

Jingbianlou is located in the east corner of Shanhaiguan city and on the city surface connecting with the Great Wall. It was built in the early Ming Dynasty and was built together with Guancheng city. It has been renovated for many times in the past dynasties, with the top of Xieshan style nine ridge double eaves and the bottom of brick and wood structure. The east side of the building is at a right angle to the South gable. It is divided into two floors, with a total construction area of 58.41 square meters and 56 arrow windows.

Muying building and linlu building are two buildings distributed in the north and south of the city of "the first pass in the world", which are used for defense and garrison. Muying building is on the south side of the first Guancheng building, connecting with the south corner of Dongluo city; linlu building is on the north side of the first Guancheng building, connecting with the north corner of Dongluo city. Both buildings were built in the 12th year of Wanli in the Ming Dynasty (1584 AD). The building has the same specifications. It is a brick and wood structure with double eaves on Xieshan ridge. The building is divided into two floors, with ridge height of 9.18 meters, length of 11.4 meters and width of 6.72 meters. There are 20 arrow windows on the upper and lower floors, and 3 ticket windows on the second floor.

Luocheng is divided into the East and the West. Dongluocheng, also known as "old city" and "old gate", is the outer city of Shanhaiguan city. In the early Ming Dynasty, there was an Earth City, and in the 12th year of Wanli, it was changed to earth brick. Xiluo city is a building attached to Xiguan of Shanhaiguan city. It was built by Zhu Guozhen, governor of Chongzhen in the 16th year of Ming Dynasty.
