Natang Temple

After the completion of the Natang temple, many famous monks came here to preach Buddhist scriptures. For example, Qinmu longgaza, the master of basiba, once lived here; i-gen-guo-zhuba also received precepts here and studied Buddhism for 17 years. Later, he built zasi temple and moved to Shigatse. The most famous of Natang temple is its Sutra printing academy. In 1730, polonai, who was also in charge of post Tibetan affairs, presided over the establishment of the Institute in order to save and promote Tibetan ancient books and scriptures.

Natang Temple

Natang temple, 15 kilometers away from Shigatse, was built in 1033 by luojiaza, a senior monk of gadang sect. Although it is far less grand than the tashilumbu temple, its history is more than 400 years longer than that of tashilumbu temple.

After the completion of Natang temple, many famous monks came here to preach Buddhist scriptures. Later, he built Zha temple and moved to Shigatse.

The most famous of Natang temple is its Sutra printing academy. In 1730, polonai, who was also in charge of post Tibetan affairs, presided over the establishment of the Institute in order to save and promote Tibetan ancient books and scriptures. This huge Sutra printing house has been built for more than 20 years. In order to complete this great project, polonai ordered the whole Tibetan people to serve as soldiers and build the Academy. At the same time, he mobilized all Tibetan calligraphers, engravers and painters, and gathered a group of young people to learn stereotyped techniques. After a long period of hard work, the Sutra Printing Institute of Natang temple has carved and printed a large number of Tibetan masterpieces, such as 108 Tibetan sutras ganzhur and 215 Buddhist sutras danzhur. All of them are complete fine engravings. Besides the characters, there are also colored board paintings on the Sutra board. In addition, many famous works, such as the biography of Sakyamuni, all came from this school.

The scale and contribution of the Sutra Printing Institute of Natang temple are larger than those of Potala Palace and dege. At the same time, the Sutra Institute of Natang temple also trained a large number of Tibetan engravers in the practice of printing, which played an immeasurable role in inheriting and developing the printing and cultural undertakings of Tibet.

Damage protection

Natang temple was once destroyed. In 1987, three halls were built on the ruins. Seven stone carvings of sixteen Arhats, a pair of footprints left by the eighth abbot jutun menlongcuocheng when he was more than 30 years old, and 8800 Scripture plates of ganzhur and danzhur were preserved in the hall.
