Exhibition Center of Dunhuang Research Institute

The exhibition center of Dunhuang Research Institute, fully known as "Dunhuang Grottoes cultural relics protection and Research Exhibition Center", is the only Grottoes cultural relics preservation and exhibition organization in China, covering an area of more than 20000 square meters. It was built free of charge by the Japanese government. It was started in February 1992, completed in April 1994, and officially opened on August 21 of the same year.

The video studio and three exhibition areas are set up in the center. The essence and development of Dunhuang grotto art are displayed here. The first exhibition area is composed of eight original large-scale reproduction caves. They are cave 275 of Dunhuang Mogao Grottoes in the Sixteen Kingdoms period, cave 249 and 285 of the Western Wei Dynasty, cave 419 of the Sui Dynasty, cave 220 of the early Tang Dynasty, cave 217 of the prosperous Tang Dynasty, cave 3 of the Yuan Dynasty and cave 25 of the middle Tang Dynasty of the Yulin Grottoes in Anxi. They are all outstanding representative caves of different periods, showing the artistic style of Dunhuang Grottoes from the Sixteen Kingdoms to the Yuan Dynasty. The second exhibition area is the display of Dunhuang Grottoes cultural relics, displaying the cultural relics unearthed from Dunhuang Grottoes. The third exhibition area, located on the second floor of the central exhibition hall, is a mobile exhibition area, which can hold various exhibitions and special cultural relics.
