Guoqi Shengyuan is the place where fan Xiping and Shi xiangxia, two outstanding Chinese players in the thousands of years of go history, played in that year. During the reign of Emperor Qianlong and Emperor Jiaqing of the Qing Dynasty, it became a place for chess players to meet, exchange skills and teach chess.

Emperor Qianlong also played chess with the two national players, and left the imperial gift of "tianyuanlou". Fan (Xiping), Shi (xiangxia), Liang (Weijin) and Cheng (Lanru), the most famous masters of the four great powers at that time, met here. Many celebrities and scholars came here to recite poems, paint, drink and play chess. "Guoqi Shengyuan" was inscribed by Yuan Mei, a great writer of the Qing Dynasty. In his epitaph of fan Xiping, it is said that "Xiping is holy for playing chess.". In history, there are many players in Shanghai, and Guoqi Shengyuan can be regarded as a holy land of Chinese go.
