Sand therapy, namely sand burying therapy, is a method for people in northwest inland desert area to treat diseases by using local unique climate and geographical conditions.

It is a kind of folk therapy that buries the diseased part in the sand and uses the comprehensive effects of sunlight, dry heat, pressure and magnetic force [the sand in the sand treatment center is 9 times higher than that in the sand from other places] to treat the disease. For the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, chronic low back and leg pain, it is said that the effective rate is more than 90%.

Sixteen kilometers northwest of Turpan, there are two large black gray sand dunes, which are ideal sand treatment sites. The local ground temperature is high. The black gray sand dune is high in heat and rich in minerals. When the sand is buried, the sand particles have friction effect on the body. Therefore, experts believe that it is a comprehensive physical therapy integrating heat therapy, magnetic therapy and massage.

The sand treatment site is an aeolian fixed sand dune, about 200 meters long, 60-80 meters wide and 8-10 meters high. According to years of meteorological data, from June 5 to August 20 every year, Turpan is hot and dry. When the daytime temperature is as high as 38-42 degrees, the surface sand temperature is as high as 75-82 degrees. Every day after 5:00 Beijing time, the sand temperature at the depth of 10 meters in the sandpile is still between 60 and 80 degrees.

Situation of sand treatment center

Sand therapy center is located in Shengya Township, Turpan City, about 9 kilometers east of Turpan City, with highway access and convenient transportation. The altitude is 72 meters. Sand therapy center was established in 1972 for Turpan Uygur hospital. It provides medical consultation, treatment, convalescence and accommodation for sand therapy patients. The hospital, guest house and other facilities have been built, and there are 16 employees, including 6 medical personnel, 800 beds, and more than 900 patients at most, which has a great influence among the masses.

The sand dunes are surrounded by farmland and some desert shrubs. The sand dunes are 8-10 meters above the ground, which can fully receive solar heat. There are restaurants and simple rest rooms beside the sand dune, which can provide convenient accommodation for patients at any time.

For tourism purposes, Turpan sand treatment center has been opened up as a tourist attraction for tourists to visit and sand treatment.
