Historical evolution

On May 18, 1899, the Qing government borrowed 9.8 million pounds from the British and German syndicates respectively. In 1908, the construction of Jinpu railway was started. In 1911, it was completed. In 1912, the Yellow River railway bridge was completed, and the whole line of Jinpu railway was opened to traffic.

In 1914, Pukou railway station and its ancillary buildings were completed and put into use. Pukou railway station became a transportation hub connecting Hebei, Shandong, Anhui, Jiangsu and other 11 provinces.

 

In 1968, the Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge was opened to traffic, and passenger transport at Pukou railway station was temporarily suspended.

 

In May 1985, Pukou railway station resumed passenger transport, opened trains to Qiqihar, Chengdu, Lanzhou, Xuzhou, Xinyi and Lianyungang, and changed its name to "Nanjing North Station".

In October 2004, Pukou railway station officially stopped operation.

 

Architectural features

Pukou railway station is an old British building with three stories of brick and wood structure, beige exterior wall and red roof.

 

A three story Beige main building is connected by a single column umbrella shaped corridor extending directly to the platform and an arched rain corridor connecting the ferry terminal. The red roof is marked with "Nanjing North Station". On the square opposite the main building, there is a "Zhongshan mourning platform" specially built to commemorate Dr. Sun Yat Sen's coffin.

 

The characteristic of Pukou railway station is that the waiting building, platform, rain corridor, ticket room, VIP Building, senior staff dormitory and other main and supporting buildings have been systematically preserved, which can be called the most complete "Centennial station". The roof of the house is blue gray machine tile, and the facade is painted with yellowish cement mortar, which is similar to the shape of "villa on the second floor". The platform, rain corridor and other ancillary buildings of Pukou railway station adopt reinforced concrete structure.

 

Cultural relics

After the Japanese invasion of China and the great fire in the "Cultural Revolution", the main building of Pukou railway station has been basically preserved. Among them, two thirds of the stair floors of the wooden structure in the station building have been replaced, and one third of the existing buildings have retained their former appearance. The main building's waiting hall door was closed and the windows were sealed with dark green boards.

 

The remains of Pukou railway station mainly include the main building, Zhongshan stilling platform, VIP Building, telegraph room and other facilities, including power plant, senior staff residential building, train ferry bridge, locomotive warehouse and so on.

 

History and culture

In the winter of 1918, Zhu Ziqing went to school in Beijing. He said goodbye to his father at Pukou railway station and wrote back.

 

In 1919, Sun Yat Sen published an article "industrial plan" in the Journal of construction. He thought that transportation must be put in the first place in modern industry, and Pukou railway station should be included in the construction focus.

In the spring of 1919, Mao Zedong sent Hunan students studying in France to Shanghai. He lost a pair of cloth shoes at Pukou railway station and got into trouble. Fortunately, he met a fellow countryman and solved his urgent need (a journey to the west by snow).

In 1927, Guo Moruo crossed the river at Pukou railway station and went to Nanchang to find revolutionary comrades.

On May 28, 1929, the train carrying Dr. Sun Yat Sen's coffin arrived at Pukou railway station from Peiping by Jinpu railway. After stopping here for a while, it crossed the river by Pukou wharf and was finally buried in Zhongshan Mausoleum.

In 1949, Deng Xiaoping and Chen Yi arrived at Pukou railway station from Hefei, crossed the river that night, drove into the presidential palace, and ushered in the dawn of Nanjing's liberation.

On August 18, 2010, Nanjing Municipal Planning Bureau announced the protection plan of Pukou railway station's historic area, including 10 provincial cultural relics protection units and historical buildings to be repaired and protected.

On May 3, 2013, the former site of Pukou railway station was listed in the list of the seventh batch of national key cultural relics protection units.

 

In October 2013, the Nanjing municipal government introduced this important modern architectural area in Nanjing.

 

In July 2015, according to the report of modern express, the main building and ticket office of Pukou railway station will be built into a train culture exhibition hall for tourists to visit, and the facade will be changed to blue brick.

 

On March 19, 2017, the reconstruction of Pukou railway station began.
