Tibet Library

Tibet library is one of the key projects of Tibet Autonomous Region during the Eighth Five Year Plan period. It was started in 1991 and completed and put into use in July 1996. The total investment of the project is 18.43 million yuan. The completion of the library has ended the history of no provincial public library in Tibet. At the beginning of its construction, the library was poor in books, supporting facilities and personnel. With the support of the superior departments and leaders and the joint efforts of the staff, the library construction has made great achievements and progress.

Collection books

There are children's reading room, newspaper reading room, Tibetan ancient books reading room, Hong Kong and Taiwan foreign language reading room, lending reading room and electronic reading room in the library. In 2005 and 2008, the National Cultural Information Resources Sharing Project Tibet autonomous division center and the Tibet Historic Sites Protection Center were established respectively, which undertook the new task of the protection of ancient books and the construction of cultural resources sharing project in Tibet. Since receiving readers on July 1, 1996, it has received more than 22000 readers per year, with circulation of nearly 50000 books and periodicals. The existing collection of new books has reached 360000, with a wide variety, complete content, and nearly 10000 kinds; the collection of periodicals has increased from 260 to 1050 (including gifts), newspapers from more than 100 to more than 242, children's magazines from 130, and newspapers from 25. It ensures the integrity and continuity of important journals and characteristic journals, and lays a good foundation for our library to form a collection system with complete disciplines, prominent key points, professional supporting and reasonable layout in the future. There are more than 18000 letters and 120000 volumes of ancient Tibetan books, including 15000 rare books. So far, more than 11000 Tibetan ancient books have been compiled, and more than 33000 card catalogues have been compiled. The publication of the catalogue of Tibetan ancient books and anthologies has been completed and is yet to be published. So far, in addition to the ancient Tibetan books and foreign books of Hong Kong and Taiwan, other books have achieved a great leap forward development in the production of machine-readable catalogue, which provides great convenience for readers to search bibliography. As a public library in the autonomous region, Tibet library not only serves the public well, drives readers to read good books, provides a good environment for readers to read and scholars to research, but also provides business training and technical guidance for County-level Libraries and libraries in the autonomous region, and provides free donations of books, periodicals and equipment, playing a leading role in business and management.

Main activities

On May 10, 2014, in order to extend the service of the library of Tibet Autonomous Region, advocate nationwide reading, and create a good reading cultural atmosphere, the library of Tibet Autonomous Region set up "Book drifting station" in the book service point for the first time. There are more than 500 books in Zhuoma Canyon Book drifting station, which has established drifting rules and made drifting bookmarks. According to the rafting rules, people can take or bring their favorite books to share with the next person.

Book drifting originated in Europe in the 1960s and 1970s. Readers put their finished books in public places for the next book lover to read. Nowadays, there are many ways of book drifting. More and more book friends set their own drifting rules when they throw books, which makes the process of book drifting more colorful.
