Chater Garden

Chater Garden was originally built in 1851 by the Hong Kong Cricket Club, known as "dabodi". It has a club and a golf course. In 1975, the club moved to Wong Nai Chung gorge and the land became the construction site of the central station of the Hong Kong Metro. After the opening of the central station in 1980, the original site was converted into a park, today's Chater Garden, which was opened in several stages. At present, there is a plaque in the garden, and there are trees in the garden to commemorate its history.

Chater Garden

Chater Garden is located in Chater Road, central, Hong Kong Island. It was opened on October 20, 1978. It is one of the most important parks in Hong Kong. It is named after Sir Jesse Paul Chater. Sir Chater is a cricket, horse racing enthusiast, Financier, philanthropist, porcelain and art collector.

Another cornerstone in Chater Garden was erected on April 2, 1890 by the then visiting Duke of Connaught to commemorate the commencement ceremony of the central reclamation project. The cornerstone was originally located near the bleachers of the club. It was removed in 1975 and moved close to its original location in 1983.

Current situation

As Chater Garden is located close to the Legislative Council Building of Hong Kong, and its square area is larger than Queen's Square, it has become a popular venue for Hong Kong citizens and political groups to hold demonstrations and gatherings.

Chater Garden is equipped with pavilions, garden paths and pools.
