The old Stanley police station is the oldest existing police building in Hong Kong. It was completed in 1859. It is one of the six earliest police stations in Hong Kong and the only one preserved today. After Hong Kong was ceded to Britain in those years, the public security in Stanley was very poor, and it was also a black spot for pirates. As early as 1840, the Hong Kong government sent troops and police to the place. In 1859, the Stanley police station was completed to take the responsibility of maintaining local public order. It cost 402 pounds, 16 shillings and two pence. Since the role of the police station at that time was the outpost at the southernmost tip of Hong Kong Island, the British garrison in Hong Kong often used the building in conjunction with the police force.
