Taiwan's National Dong Hwa University, founded in 1994, is a public research university located in Shoufeng Township, Hualien County, Taiwan, China. It is also the first comprehensive university in Eastern Taiwan. It covers an area of 261 hectares (excluding the school of Marine Sciences). The school is known as "the highest University in the east of Taiwan" and "Taiwan's back garden".

In 2008, the University merged with Hualien University of education. The new name of the university is still "Donghua University" and "Huashi College of education" was established. Donghua University is now the center of academic research, industrial development and Internet in Eastern Taiwan. It belongs to the Pan Pacific University Alliance and is also a member of the European Union Center in Taiwan (eutw).

There are 8 colleges in Donghua University, including school of management, School of science and technology, School of Humanities and Social Sciences, School of Huashi education, School of Aboriginal nationalities, School of marine science, School of art and School of environment. There are 13 doctoral programs, 28 master's programs, 22 bachelor's programs and 8 master's in-service training programs. The school has more than 11000 students, more than 800 teaching staff, including more than 500 professors.

Donghua University is the first comprehensive university in Eastern Taiwan of China. It has set up a campus in a sugarcane field. Today, Donghua University is not only located in Shoufeng Township, but also in Pingtung Marine Biology Museum and Hualien Meilun campus. The school covers an area of 261 hectares (excluding the school of Marine Sciences), and its headquarters is located at the starting point of Huadong longitudinal valley. It is a famous tourist attraction in Eastern Taiwan. The Academy of Marine Sciences was founded in 2004 in cooperation with the Museum of marine life, the first university museum cooperation. Donghua University was officially established on July 1, 1994. Donghua University has not been established for a long time, but it attaches great importance to academic research. More than 90% of its teachers have doctorates from Columbia University, Oxford University and other top European and American universities. As the first comprehensive university in the East, under the leadership of its first president, Dr. Mou zongcan, through careful and comprehensive campus and Department planning, Hualien University plays a diversified educational function in Hualien, which is simple, natural and rich in human resources, so as to improve the academic and cultural standards in the east of Taiwan and move towards the goal of becoming an international first-class university.

About founding a school

School name

The original planning school is called "East China University". Later, the "East China" means "East China", which caused political controversy. And there are several universities in Chinese mainland called "East China". Therefore, the original name was changed to "Donghua University".

"The emperor of China, in the other Yuanxi" language out of the "book of songs · Xiaoya", meaning: the brilliant flowers ah, blooming in the endless plain.

Note: the name of the existing university in Shanghai, China is < / I < idonghua University < / I < I (formerly East China Institute of textile technology), but it was named later than "Donghua University" in Taiwan in 1999. In the 1920s, there was also Donghua University (formerly Nanyang Road and mining school) in Shanghai with the same name.

The logo of the school is designed in a circle, which means the concept of unity of the whole school.

However, after the merger with Hualien University of education, the style of the school emblem was changed immediately, and the old school emblem of Hualien University of education was added to the original book and circular design to become a new style.

School mascot

Ring necked pheasant is an endemic subspecies of conservation animals in Taiwan. Ring necked pheasants are common in the campus in the early morning, which is a special ecological landscape of Donghua University. Students regard it as a mascot. Among the souvenirs sold by the school, there are often pictures of the ring necked pheasant, graduation ceremonies and other activities, and even dolls dressed as ring necked pheasants.

Planning period

On August 19, 1989, Li Huan, the head of the Taiwan administration, pointed out in the policy address of the legislative body of the Taiwan authorities that the university should be set up out of Hualien's plan.

In January 1990, a "preliminary planning group" was set up. The convener was Yang Chaoxiang, Vice Minister of the Education Department of the Taiwan authorities.

On December 29, 1990, the southeast district of Hualian farm, Zhixue village, Shoufeng Township, Hualian County (the former East District and the south district were merged) was officially selected as the site of the school.
