Xiahao old street

Xiahao old street is located in Nan'an District of Chongqing, near Nanbin road and on a slope of dongshuimen Yangtze River Bridge. It mainly includes xiahaozheng street, dongjiaqiao street, juelinsi street, vineyard street, etc.

On June 15, 2016, the old street garden project was officially launched. On July 17, 2016, Ao Zhen was invited to participate in Ted's speech in Chongqing, and her story with xiahao old street was known by more people. People call her "south bank woman Xia".

Historical evolution

Xiahao street used to be the only way to reach Longmen Wharf on the Yangtze River. During the period of the capital, Longmen wharf was the main road connecting Yuzhong Peninsula and the south bank. In the 1960s and 1970s, many small businesses moved into xiahaozheng street. Before the 1980s, xiahao street had always been a prosperous street on the South Bank of the Yangtze River.

Now, with the development of Nanbin road and the construction of dongshuimen bridge, xiahao old street has declined. Walking in the streets of xiahao, the words "demolish" and "dangerous" can be seen everywhere. The remnants of the old street in Chongqing may disappear completely in the near future.

Street composition

Xiahao old street also includes xiahao Main Street, juelin temple, Mishi street, wangerlou, vineyard and other small streets. It is said that this area had already formed a market in the Qianlong period of the Qing Dynasty. This street connects the Yangtze River. Before liberation, the old wharf of Longmen Hao was a dual-purpose wharf for passengers and goods in Chongqing. From the wharf to Shangxin street, xiahaozheng street and dongjiaqiao are the only way to go. In addition, juelin temple, a famous temple in Bayu, was also here. A hundred years ago, xiahao area was very busy.

Nanan nvxia

AoHong is not an indigenous people. In 2014, attracted by the architecture and lifestyle of xiahao old street, she moved here and opened a small teahouse. After moving here, Ao lived a "slow life". She buys vegetables, washes clothes, cleans and trims the plants on the roof garden every day. In her words, "it's just a matter of chopping firewood to feed the horses.".

One day, the elder sister next door put her head out and said, "girl, your garden is so beautiful. Help me get one." Thinking of an abandoned open space nearby, Ao had an idea: just build a public garden in the middle of the street for the neighborhood. "Even if the old street is to be demolished, I also want to have a better life before demolition." So she and her friends launched a crowdfunding campaign online. Her life style and the history of the old street "captured" many netizens. A few weeks later, she raised more than 7000 yuan. This plan has also attracted the attention of the neighborhood committee of xiahao street. The neighborhood committee specially held a "launching ceremony of residents' autonomy" to call on the community residents to contribute to the construction of the street garden.

Aozhen and xiahao old street are famous together. On June 15, 2016, the old street garden project was officially launched. Together with her friends, she fenced and planted plants. She also invited artists and children to doodle on the mottled walls of the old street, and even found abandoned windows and benches for installation art. On July 17, 2016, Ao Zhen was invited to participate in the speech activity of Ted (world famous speech Conference) in Chongqing. Her story with xiahao old street was known by more people. People call her "south bank woman Xia". Xiahao old street has become lively and charming again.

Media evaluation

In an article in National Geographic magazine of the United States, xiahao old street is called "another world": there are two kinds of people in this world: one is xiahao's aborigines, who keep the lifestyle of old Chongqing; the other is a group of young people who open teahouses in xiahao, who add a touch of color to the declining xiahao.
