Fenghuang mountain, Yan'an

Fenghuang mountain, located in the center of Yan'an City, is one of the "four famous mountains" in Yan'an. It is named after the legend of "Ye Sheng blows the flute to attract the Phoenix" in Fenghuang Mountain Scenic map. It can be called a major scenic spot in Yan'an from ancient times to the present. According to the annals of Yan'an Prefecture of the Qing Dynasty, "the city is on top of it, with towering battlements. It is the head of the county and the mountain. On top of it is the West Tower of the town. Fan Zhongyan of the Song dynasty built it, and the remnant stele still exists.".

Fenghuang mountain is located in Baota District, Yan'an City, Shaanxi Province. It is composed of two major scenic spots, East Mountain and west mountain. The highest peak, "Zanyun peak", is 836 meters above sea level and covers an area of 216 square kilometers. Fenghuang mountain is one of the four famous mountains in Fengtian and the first in Eastern Liaoning. It is known as the "famous mountain of the country", "the first mountain of the Great Wall" and "the first mountain of Chinese adventure". During the reign of emperor Zhenguan of Tang Dynasty, Li Shimin, Emperor Taizong of Tang Dynasty, toured the mountain. When he toured the mountain, there was a legend of "Phoenix worshiping ancestors", so he named the mountain "Phoenix Mountain".

The highest altitude of Fenghuang mountain is 1132 meters. It is the top of the mountains around Yan'an City, and also the main support of Yan'an City. Therefore, the city fortifications of past dynasties were built on the east slope of the mountain and on the side of the mountain, which was the place for garrison troops to defend the city. There are zhenxilou, Fenghuang Pavilion, Wenchang Pavilion, LIULANG village, Diqing village and zhuanbing cave which is said to have been excavated by Yang LIULANG (Yanzhao) during the Northern Song Dynasty. According to textual research, the ancient city wall built along the mountain was built in 215 BC, with a history of more than 2000 years. It is the earliest, largest and most complete city in Yan'an. According to reports, after the first emperor of Qin unified the Central Plains, he took the Xiongnu in the north as the main enemy threatening the security of the Qin Dynasty, so he ordered general Meng Tian to lead 300000 troops to march north to Xiongnu. In order to advance and retreat smoothly, Meng Tian adopted two important military strategies, that is, to play steadily on the offensive line, to camp step by step on the defensive line, to defend and control the attack. Yanzhou is one of them. It was ordered to build a city in Fenghuang Mountain as a pool. With the continuous war in the border area, it was rebuilt in all dynasties, especially during the period of guarding Yanzhou by Yuchi Gong, a famous general of the Tang Dynasty. Later, the famous generals of the Northern Song Dynasty, such as Han Qi, Fan Zhongyan, Pangji, Yang Jiajiang, and Shen Kuo, spared no effort to strengthen and perfect the garrison, which made the city form a magnificent landscape of Fenghuang mountain, together with the surrounding military throat, a total of five cities echoing each other, known as the "five flower lotus city" in successive dynasties.
